Elizabeth Mills (Libba) Rane, a resident of Abbeville, died Wednesday night, August 19, 2015, at her home. She was 95.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, August 23, 2015, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverend Ryan Johnson, Reverend Ray S. Reiley, John S. Riley and Coach Gene Stallings officiating. Entombment will follow in the Rane-Mills Mausoleum in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 3:30 until 6:00 P.M. on Saturday in the First Baptist Church Family Life Building.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Jimmy Rane Foundation, P.O. Box 40, Abbeville, AL 36310, the First Baptist Church of Abbeville, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL 36310, or the Matrons Club, c/o Elizabeth Starling, 118 Park Drive, Abbeville, AL 36310.
Mrs. Rane was born and reared in the Barnes Community of Henry County, daughter of the late Lindsay Fowler Mills and Anne Tye Mills. She was a graduate of Abbeville High School and attended Troy State Teachers College where she was a majorette in the Troy State marching band. In 1942, at the establishment of Camp Rucker, Mrs. Rane joined the civilian work force as secretary to the hospital administrator, Anthony J. Rane. Anthony Rane and Elizabeth Mills were married September 30, 1943. At the conclusion of World War II, they moved to Abbeville. Mr. and Mrs. Rane established several businesses which included the Village Inn Restaurant, Rane Furniture Company, Lentone Jewelry, the Henry County Livestock Association, the Embers Restaurant in Eufaula and several Holiday Inns beginning with the first one in Eufaula.
Mrs. Rane was a founding member of the Matrons Club and the Abbeville Garden Club, and was the driving force behind the formation of the Joy Club and the work it did on behalf of area senior citizens. In addition, she was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts. She was an active member of the First Baptist Church where she served as a Sunday School teacher, a Girls in Action leader and in various other activities in the church. Mrs. Rane was a founding member of the Board of Directors of Great Southern Wood and served in that capacity until her death. She was preceded in death by her husband, Anthony Joseph (Tony) Rane, two sisters, Mary Bernice Mills Carter and Robbie Mills Linn, and three brothers, Sydney Eugene (Gene) Mills, C.W. (Bill) Mills and H. E. (Ed) Mills.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Jimmy Rane (Angela), Abbeville; Greg Rane (Kathleen), Dothan; nine grandchildren, Ashleigh Rane Savoy (Kevin), James W. Rane, Jr. (Mandy), Lindsay Anne Rane Carter (Chance), Jason Hudspeth (Leslie), Chris Hudspeth (Mallory), Keith Rane (Ashley Maddox), Kylie Rane Marburger (Rob), G. G. Daly (Pat), and Dr. Tom Holley (Liz); numerous great-grandchildren.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Chad Jones, Lester H. Killebrew, Johnny Lindsey, Robert Edward Phillips, Buddy Riley, Mitchell Weaver, Gene Woodham and Mark Callender.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Matrons Club members, Coach Larry Blakeney, Coach Pat Dye, Coach Cliff Ellis, Coach Ray Goff, Coach Wimp Sanderson and Coach Gene Stallings.
