ELLA VERNA GIVENS
HEADLAND. . . Ella Verna Rister Givens, a resident of Headland, died early Wednesday morning, February 6, 2019, at her home. She was 97.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, February 8, 2019, in the Worship Center of the First Baptist Church of Headland with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Friday in the church sanctuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the “Music Ministry” of the First Baptist Church of Headland, 301 E. Church Street, Headland, AL 36345.
Mrs. Givens was born and reared in the Blackwood Community of Dale County, daughter of the late Webster Lee Rister and Pastora Brackin Rister. She was a 1940 graduate of Midland City High School and attended Troy University where she received a degree in Elementary Education. Mrs. Givens retired as an Elementary School teacher from the Headland Elementary School. In earlier years, she taught in Carrabelle, Florida and the Hebron School. Mrs. Givens was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Headland and the Senior Choir. She also served as a Royal Ambassador Leader and in the church library. Mrs. Givens was preceded in death by a granddaughter, McCall Akin, four sisters, Quintelene Rister, Mildred R. Hinson, Lois R. Branch and Giscene Weaver, three brothers, Maurice Rister, Phil Rister and Neil Rister, and her step-mother, Birdie Kirkland Rister.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Julius Ralph Givens, Sr.; a daughter, Charlotte G. Nichols (Ron), Huntsville, AL; two sons, Julius R. Givens, Jr. (Noreen), Lawrenceville, GA; and Mark A. Givens (Beth), Headland; a sister-in-law, Pat Rister, Headland; six grandchildren, Cathy Carroll, Andy Givens (Ashley), Abby McKay (Trey), Grant Givens (Lindsey) and Laurabeth Givens (fiance’, Alex Thomas), Marisa Akin (Andy); six great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Kindred Hospice and First Light for the loving care and kindness shown to Mrs. Givens during her illness.
