Elvira Preston Curry, a resident of Midland City, died early Saturday morning, September 26, 2015, in the Ozark Health and Rehabilitation Facility. She was 88.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, September 28, 2015 in the Midland City Baptist Church with Reverend Taylor Hodges and Dr. David Coggins officiating. Burial will follow in the Pinckard Memorial Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 3:00 to 5:00 P.M. Sunday at the mortuary in Headland. At other times, the family will be at the home of Faye and Donald Shipes, 2784 County Road 3, Headland, Alabama.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Midland City Baptist Church, P.O. Box 694, Midland City, AL 36350.
Mrs. Curry was a native of Midland City, daughter of the late Owen Russell Preston, Sr. and Emma Mayo Preston. She lived most of her adult lifetime in the Pinckard and Midland City area. Mrs. Curry was a graduate of Midland City High School and attended Judson College where she received a B.A. Degree in Music and English. She received her Master’s Degree from Troy University. Mrs. Curry was retired from South Dale Middle School as an English teacher. She taught for a total of thirty-six years in the Dale County School System where she touched numerous students’ lives. Mrs. Curry was a member of the Alpha Delta Kappa Honorary Teachers Sorority, the Dale County Retired Educators Association, the Alabama Retired Educators Association, the Alabama Education Association and the National Education Association. She was a member of the Midland City Baptist Church where she served as church pianist for over sixty years, and also taught Sunday school and was active in the W.M.U. She participated in several mission trips with the Dale Baptist Association and was a member of the Lucy Hathaway Cornerstone Prayer Group. Mrs. Curry was a former member of the Pinckard Study Club. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Owen Russell Preston, Jr., John Mayo Preston, and the father of her children, Travis Hill Curry.
Surviving relatives include four daughters, Dorothy Fletcher (Mickey), Emma Borland (Tom), all of Pinckard; Faye Shipes (Donald), Headland and Hilldarose Ray (David), Dothan; six grandsons, Curry Fletcher (Becky), Merlyn Borland (Jennifer), Brent Fletcher (Cindy), Preston Shipes (Misty), John Shipes (Sarah), and Jared Ray; six great-grandchildren, Zach Lineberry, Hayden McWaters, Emily Fletcher, Ethan Fletcher, Tom Borland, and Maddie Shipes; two sisters-in-law, Jeanne Preston, Huntsville and Ruby Preston, Baltimore, MD; several nieces and nephews.
Serving as active pallbearers will be grandsons and great-grandsons.
The family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Ozark Health and Rehabilitation for the loving care and kindness shown to their mother.
