ABBEVILLE. . . Emma Jean McKnight-Whatley, a former resident of Abbeville, died early Wednesday morning, April 19, 2017, in a Dothan hospital. She was 88.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Saturday, April 22, 2017, in the Union Free Will Baptist Church with Reverend Ray S. Reiley officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:00 A.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary.
Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Union Free Will Baptist Church, c/o Carol Johns, 206 Briarhill Rd, Abbeville, AL 36310.
Mrs. McKnight-Whatley was born and reared in Henry County and Columbia, daughter of the late Ashley Henry Gray and Thelma Clifford Shelley Gray. She lived most of her adult lifetime in the Union Community of Henry County where she was a member of the Union Free Will Baptist Church. She was formerly employed by WestPoint Stevens, Pitts Drug Store and the C.S. Herndon Oil Company. Mrs. McKnight-Whatley was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy F. McKnight, a granddaughter, Emily Carol Calvasina, her son-in-law, Eugene Calvasina, and three brothers, Gene Autrey Gray, Billy Fred Gray, and Buddy Gray.
Surviving relatives include her husband, Johnny James Whatley, Ashford; a daughter, Jane McKnight Calvasina, Dothan; two grandchildren, John Joseph Calvasina, Pittsburgh, PA; and Lori Elizabeth Sussman (Carl), Brooklyn, NY; a great-grandson, Leo Maxwell Sussman; a sister, Ruby Williford, Tunica, MS; a brother-in-law, Joe McKnight (June), Abbeville.
