Enzel O’Nell Pennington


Enzel O’Nell (Scottie) Pennington, a resident of Dothan, died Monday, August 24, 2015 at Extendicare. She was 85.


Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m. Friday, August 28, 2015 at Byrd Funeral Home with Rev. Paul Thompson and Rev. Woody and Patty Farrington officiating. Burial will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends from 9:00-10:45 a.m. Friday morning at the funeral home.


Mrs. Pennington was born on her family farm in Alford, Florida on July 19, 1930 to the late John Lenzy Scott and Lessie Lorene Dilmore Scott. She accepted Christ as her Saviour at a young age and was baptized in Round Lake. Mrs. Pennington graduated from Cottondale High School at age 16 and left home for the first time to pursue her dream of becoming a nurse at Charity Hospital, New Orleans. 


After graduation, she worked as nursing supervisor at the new Dale Medical Center in Ozark, Alabama. It was there that she met her husband-to-be, Howard T. Pennington, and they married on December 12, 1954. Her life quickly changed as she stayed home for several years excelling at her most important job as mother. As her children got older, Mrs. Pennington returned to her nursing career as a surgical RN at Southeast Alabama Medical Center. 


Her hobbies included gardening, painting and baking. She loved to share with others, including her lovely roses, artwork and numerous batches of cream cheese pecan cookies. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church for almost 60 years and from there had many life-long friendships. 


She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard T. Pennington, Sr.; a son, Howard T. “Thad” Pennington, Jr.; a sister, Ernestine Scott Covington; and a brother, Maurice Scott. 


Survivors include her four daughters, Rhonda Deanhardt (Luke), Linda Pennington, Camille Grimes (Terry), and Anna Bassett (Mark); eight grandchildren, Leah Fogle (Tripp), Aaron Deanhardt, Steadman Nall, Brandon Nall (Whitney), Brock Golson (Hannah), Heather Branton (Foster), Matthew Bassett (Emily), and Ben Bassett (Natalie); several great-grandchildren; one sister, Patsy Edgar; and three brothers, Forrest Scott, Fern Scott, and Lendon Scott. 


Serving as pallbearers will be her grandsons. 


The family would like to thank Mrs. Pennington’s nurses and the staff at Extendicare for the loving care given to her during the last several months.
