In May 1939, Nurse Erma Snell, with specific instructions from Dr. Holman, went to the Bertha Community to care for an infant whose mother had died on the morning of her birth. She later married the child’s father, John D. “J.D.” Martin, of the Bertha Community in Dale County, Alabama, and became the loving mother of his little daughter, Manonia. Erma and J. D. later had two daughters, Virginia Ann Martin, and Nancy Juanita Martin.
The family lived in the Bertha Community where J. D. and Erma owned and operated the Bertha Self Service Grocery Store for more than forty years before their retirement in the late 1980’s. Both were lifetime members of the New Hope Baptist Church.
Since 2003, “Miss Erma” had been a resident of the Ozark Health & Rehabilitation Facility where her radiant smile and congenial personality blessed many of those who came in daily contact with her. The family acknowledges deep appreciation for the love and care that was given to their Mother by the staff and administration of the Ozark Health & Rehabilitation Facility, Gentiva Hospice, and Taylor Caffey, M.D.
Mrs. Martin was preceded in death by her husband, J. D. Martin, her parents, Millard and Claudia Snell, and all her siblings (and their mates), Lucille Baldwin, Roy Snell, Harvey Snell, Laura Jane Hollon, Lois Skipper, Willie Belle Judah, Hettie Hughes, Elsie McGill, and Kenneth Snell.
She was a kind and loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a great-great-grandmother. She is survived by her three daughters, Manonia Snell (Jessie Thomas Snell), Skipperville; Ann Galloway (Lamar Galloway), Bertha Community; Nancy Gast (Douglas Gast), Bertha Community; her two grandchildren, Timothy Galloway (Timberly “MiMi”), Skipperville; Brandi Rogers (Chad Golbis), Madison, WI; her three great-grandchildren, Alycia Galloway Frazier, Auburn; Cara Galloway Snyder (Charles), Ft.
