ERNEST HILL BRADY
CEDAR SPRINGS, GEORGIA…Ernest Hill Brady was born on September 20, 1917, in Henry County, Alabama, son of the late Katie Williams Brady and Emmitt Polk Brady. He was the oldest son of eight boys and five girls. The family lived at times in Henry and Barbour Counties, Alabama. Ernest attended the Barnes Community School and went west as a young man to work in irrigation fields in Arizona. Upon his return, he married Carolyn Ruth Carr Brady in Eufaula, Alabama, on August 26, 1939. They farmed in various locations in Henry County, Alabama, where three daughters were born (Betty, Tina, and Pat).
During World War II, he moved the family to Panama City, Florida, where he helped to build ships for the Merchant Marines. Three more children were born in Bay County (Martha, Bill, and Kay). He traveled for work from Minnesota to Louisiana, building dams and paper mills.
In 1963, Ernest traveled to Cedar Springs, Georgia, to help build Georgia-Pacific and then he purchased a nearby farm. He retired from the powerhouse/machine shop in 1986.
Surviving is his wife, Carolyn Carr Brady of Cedar Springs, Georgia, and their daughters: Betty Brady of Cedar Springs, Pat Traugh of Cedar Springs, Martha Hackett of Blakely, Georgia, and Kay Owens of Dothan, Alabama. Also surviving are two of Earnest’s sisters: Clarice Barron of Abbeville, Alabama, and Thelma Wilkinson of Dothan, Alabama. He had 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Ernest was preceded in death by his parents, Emmitt and Katie Brady, as well as his 7 brothers (Maxwell, Lloyd, Morgan, Charles, Robert, John, and Jack Brady) and 3 sisters (Zora Presley, Bess Magee, and Oberia Bowdin). His children, Bill Brady and Tina Stevenson, also preceded him in death.
In his younger years, he enjoyed fishing before and after work, taking his wife and children, if they were willing to go. His favorite fishing spots were Deer Point Dam in Bay County and Dead Lakes in Wewahitchka. Ernest is well-known throughout the community for his large yearly garden through his 93rd year.
His interment will be in the Union Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery, Henry County, Alabama, near the place of his birth, and among many of his relatives. Graveside services for the family will be officiated by Brother Steven Traugh. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 6:00 P.M. (CDT) or 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. (EDT) Thursday, May 09, 2013, at the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary, Abbeville, Alabama.
