Essie V Spikes, a longtime resident of Black, AL, passed away on Sunday, February 11, 2018, at the age of 91.  She was our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend.  The family will hold a private interment at Sunset Memorial Gardens.  In lieu of flowers, please make donations to either the Palm Beach Florida Hospice or American Diabetes Association


Ms. Essie was born in Noma, FL on January 24, 1927, to the late Alto and Eula Mae Henderson Owens.  She was a very loving mother, grandmother and a friend to all.   She reminded us always of the true meaning of family, and her most precious gift to each of us was her unconditional love and support.  Ms. Essie’s love of life and people affected many lives.  She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred Alexander Spikes; three sisters, Bernice VanLandingham, Virginia Oaks, and Elizabeth Sellers; and a brother, Floyd Owens.


She is survived by her daughter, Phyllis Atherton (Mark) of Palm Beach Gardens, FL; son, Keith Spikes of North Palm Beach, FL; granddaughter, Kristin Atherton of Hartford, CT; two nieces, Patti Phipps (Dennis) of Geneva and Deana Oaks of Jensen Beach, FL; two nephews, Darrin VanLandingham (Jessica) of Hoover, AL and Kevin VanLandingham (Kelly) of Blacksburg, SC; six grandnieces and grandnephews; Linsey Phipps of Birmimgham, AL, Chase Phipps of Murfreesboro, TN, Kylie VanLandingham of Tuscaloosa, AL, Morgan VanLandingham of Hoover, AL, Ceara VanLandingham of Blacksburg, SC, and Cole VanLandingham of Williamsburg, VA.
