WEBB. . .Ethel McGilvray Deese, a resident of Webb, died late  Thursday night, April 21, 2022, at her home. She was 103.


Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Monday, April 25, 2022, in the Webb Baptist Church with Dr. Jerry Windsor officiating. Burial will follow in the Webb Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Monday in the church sanctuary.


In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Alabama Baptist Children’s Home, 325 Ross Clark Circle, Dothan, AL 36303.


Mrs. Deese was born and reared in Houston County, near Ashford, daughter of the late Alpheus McGilvray and Mae Maddox McGilvray. She formerly lived in Grand Ridge, Florida but lived most of her lifetime in Webb. She was retired from the Florida State Hospital in Chattahoochee as the Librarian. After retirement, Mrs. Deese was employed by the U. S. Postal Service in the Webb Post Office as the Assistant Postmaster. She was an active member of the Webb Baptist Church where she helped to establish the church library and served as a Sunday School teacher to both children and adults. She ministered to those struggling with mental health issues through her involvement in a local mental health support group.  She also had a passion for adult literacy, teaching adult literacy classes in Houston County. Mrs. Deese was a talented and accomplished seamstress and worked for an interior decorator making draperies and other home furnishings. She served as the first City Clerk for the Town of Webb. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lowell Deese, two sisters, Esther Gamble and Opal Suddath, two brothers, and a grandson-in-law, Bruce Jernigan.


Surviving relatives include two daughters, Mamie Dickerson (Glenn, Webb; and Janie Lane (Ken), Cowarts; five grandchildren, Ivy Jernigan, Kevin Dickerson (Fiance' Amanda), Nikki Swann (Matt), Clay Lane (Lenzie), and Maegan Standley (Alan); eight great-grandchildren, William Lonsdale, Will Swann, Reid Swann, Knox Lane, Stella Lane, Madelyn Standley, Nora Mae Standley and Asher Standley.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Kevin Dickerson, Clay Lane, Knox Lane, Matt Swann, Will Swann, Reid Swann.
