Eugenia Mills Berta, age 87, of Clayhatchee, AL, passed away, Monday, September 15, 2014 at her home.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Thursday, September 18, 2014 at Providence Baptist Church with Rev. Chad Hixson officiating. Burial will follow in Providence Cemetery with Searcy Funeral Home and Crematory directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 4:00 P.M. until 7:00 P.M., Wednesday, September 17th. Memorials may be made to WMU Foundation, 100 Missionary Ridge, Birmingham, AL 35242, Providence Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 10 Providence Lane, Daleville, AL or to Old Providence Foundation, 100 Mills-Austin Road, Daleville, AL 36322.
Gene was a lifetime member of Providence Baptist Church and served as pianist, Sunday School Teacher, Church Clerk and WMU Director. She was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution, Alpha Phi Sorority and was on the Dale County Library board.
She earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama and a Master’s degree from Barry University, Miami, FL. Gene worked for 43 years with the U. S. Army Civil Service and was at one time the highest rated female civilian employee at Fort Rucker. She worked at the Army Aviation Test Board and the Directorate of Combat Developments.
She traveled the Western world extensively, enjoyed her grandchildren and the University of Alabama athletics.
She was preceded in death by her father and mother, Wesley and Nancy Mills and her husband, Jim Berta.
Survivors include her son, Wesley Berta (Elizabeth) Tuscaloosa, AL; five grandchildren, Wesley Berta, Jr. Ft. Walton Beach, FL; Nancy Elizabeth Berta, Moulton, AL; Victoria Lowery, Los Angeles, CA; Katherine Berta; Thomas Berta, both of Tuscaloosa, AL.
