HEADLAND…Evelyn Woodham Phillips, a resident of Headland, died early Thursday morning, January 23, 2014, at her home. She was 86. 


            Funeral Services will be held at 10:30 A.M. Saturday, January 25, 2014, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Phil Craddock and Reverend Charles W. Price, Jr. officiating.  Burial will follow in the Headland Methodist Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P.M. Friday at the mortuary.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the Headland United Methodist Church Building Fund, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345 or to Covenant Hospice, 104 Rock Bridge Road, Dothan, AL 36303.


            Mrs. Phillips was a lifelong resident of Headland and a graduate of Headland High School.  She retired from the Headland Piggly Wiggly as bookkeeper and cashier after more than thirty years employment. In earlier years, she worked as a hairdresser.  Mrs. Phillips was a member of the Headland United Methodist Church, the Pearl Haynes Circle, and the Charlie Burdeshaw Sunday School Class.


            Mrs. Phillips was a loving and devoted daughter, wife, mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She always put others before herself. Mrs. Phillips was affectionately called MawMaw, Great and Abby by her family.                              Mrs. Phillips was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Pillie Woodham and Ellie Hazel French Woodham; her husband, John Hardwick Phillips; an infant daughter; a sister, Frances Woodham Harper; and brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Winston Griggs, Sr., Bernard and Dorothy Andrews, Joe and Louise Phillips, Lannie and Louise Cain.


Surviving relatives include a daughter, Mary Phillips Sanders (Tommy), Dadeville, AL; a son, Charles Phillips (Sarah), Headland; a sister, Jean Barefield (Roger), Bertha Community; six grandchildren, Eve Phillips Baltzell (Ian), John Allen Phillips (Denise), Elizabeth Sanders, Kevin Sanders (Amy), Linda Sanders Williams (Bruce), and Lisa Sanders; nine great grandchildren, Kenny, Kara, Aly, Carter, Camden, Hannah, Aiden, Riley Jane, and John Tillman; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Griggs, Headland; a brother-in-law, Archie Harper, Pansey, AL; and numerous nieces and nephews.


Serving as active pallbearers will be Ronnie Whitehead, Roger Mixson, Jonathon Whitehead, Winston Griggs, Jr., David Griggs, Kevin Sanders, John Allen Phillips, and Ian Baltzell.  Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Don McGriff, Steve Snell, Benny Butler, Clint Pitchford, Freddy Edgerton, Daniel Harper, and Dr. Phil Griggs.


The family would like to express a very special thank you to Covenant Hospice, especially her caregivers, Tasha Tyre and Sonya Snow, for the loving care and kindnesses shown to Mrs. Phillips during her illness.
