Flem Whitehurst Houston, of Bonifay, Florida passed away on January 20, 2021 one week shy of his 89th birthday. He was born and raised in Oxford, Alabama by his late parents, Tom and Nannie Houston. A 1950 Graduate of Oxford High School, he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Upon his return from service, Flem began what became a 40-year career with General Electric at the Oxford GE Plant. After the plant closed, his employment with GE took him to Redstone Arsenal, Alabama; Daytona Beach, Florida; and Wilmington, North Carolina. After retiring from GE, Flem owned and operated several successful restaurants in the Panama City, Florida area.
In addition to his parents, Flem was preceded in death by eight brothers: Harold, Wayne, Owen, And Paul Houston and Lamar Hood of Oxford, AL and Hugh, Frank, and Tommy Houston of Anniston, AL.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Becky Houston, and a stepson, Shane Britt of Bonifay, FL and a son, Steve Houston (Carol) of Dalton, GA, five grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces.
Flem was a long-time member of Izagora Congregational Methodist Church in Bonifay. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, January 24, 2021 at East Pittman Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery (1255 Hwy 179 Bonifay, FL 32425) with Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home of Geneva, AL directing. The family kindly requests those who are planning to attend the service for Flem to please wear a facial covering and practice social distancing due to the ongoing pandemic.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be in Flem’s memory to Izagora Congregational Methodist Church, 1501 County Rd 179, Bonifay, FL 32425.
