Flora Dell (Tew) Roach was born in Slocomb, Alabama, on November 22, 1927. She entered Heaven on December 31, 2017.
A devoted wife, mother, sister, and friend, Flora was a wonderful homemaker whose potato salad, fried cornbread, and chocolate-chip cookies were legendary. She regularly performed beautiful acts of kindness for her family and friends. Over the years, she tirelessly supported the Alcazar Wiregrass Shrine Club (especially on Bingo Thursdays) and the American Heart Association.
She was passionate and oddly competitive when it came to playing dominos and rubbikub—traveling regularly and representing Rose Hill Senior Center in statewide domino tournaments. She loved to go bowling and host her family at Compass Lake—and even jet-skied a couple of times, without having mastered the art of swimming. She enjoyed watching television game shows (The Price is Right and Let’s Make a Deal), her favorite soap operas (General Hospital and Young and the Restless), and WTVY news. Having invested substantially in Auburn University in support of her children’s education, she especially enjoyed watching and rooting for the Tiger’s football team.
Flora had a quiet, unwavering faith in God. She was a devoted member of Grandview Baptist Church in Dothan. Over the years, she was very involved with the church (think bake sales and pot lucks), ensuring that her kids stayed out of trouble by keeping them busy with Sunday school, training union, choir practice, and the occasional week-long revivals. Whenever family members, friends, or fellow church members were hospitalized, she was at their bedsides until they were well.
Flora was predeceased by her loving husband of 47 years, Bobby Lee Roach, and her siblings, Mozell Kent, and Gladys, Clifton, and Grover Tew. She is survived by her brothers, Grady and Clint Tew; her sister, Onis Smith; her children, Debbie Gaut and Patti Crabtree; and her grandchildren, Austin and Morgan Crabtree.
Visitation will take place from 10-10:30 on Saturday, January 6, at Sunset Memorial Park Funeral Home, 1700 Barrington Road, Midland City, Alabama 36350, with the funeral to immediately follow. Her graveside service will take place at 11:30 a.m. at Gardens of Memory, 6200 U.S. Highway 431 North, Headland, AL 36345.
Flowers are welcome. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association.
