Flynn Dillard Morris, Jr. went Home to be with the Lord on March 13, 2017, after a lengthy battle with cancer. He passed peacefully with his close family by his side.
Flynn was the son of Thelma Skinner Morris & Flynn Dillard Morris; grandson of Mattie Sue Riley Skinner and David Lafayette Skinner and Annie Campbell Morris & Drewry Hampton Morris.
He is survived by his brother, David Earl Morris (wife Debra); sisters, Suanne Morris McAliley (husband Greg) and Jeannie Morris Owens; son and best friend, Flynn D. "Trey" Morris, III (wife Susan); daughter, Julie Arroyo, and granddaughter Corley Arroyo; stepdaughters, Karen Cater Westcott and Amanda Cater Marsh; significant other, Eva Barnes and daughter Sarah (husband Todd); and granddaughter Gabby; and dear friend and “adopted” family member, Dana Bowen; as well as Tammy Wright, a very loyal and dedicated friend and office manager.
Flynn was born in Dothan, Alabama, on May 21, 1945. He was raised in Geneva, Alabama and worked on family-owned Morris Farms during his early years when he wasn’t competing in sports or hunting or fishing. Though he excelled in baseball and basketball, his passion was football, and he received All-American honors his senior year at Geneva High. He earned a scholarship to play football at his beloved Auburn University. During his years as an Auburn Tiger football player, Flynn made many lifelong friends among his teammates. His love of Auburn never dimmed, and one of his last requests was “bury me wearing my Auburn cap.”
After graduating from Auburn, Flynn worked with his daddy on Morris Farms for a few years before accepting a job to manage a large farm in Madison, Georgia, where he made his home for more than 20 years. Flynn, who could always build or fix about anything, eventually turned from farming to homebuilding, first in the Atlanta area before moving on to another of his great loves in life, Blue Mountain Beach, Florida, where Flynn and the Morris family had spent many enjoyable summers during Flynn’s growing-up years. Flynn continued to build homes in the Destin area, often with the help of Trey, Suanne, and Dana Bowen, until his final days. To all who knew him, Flynn was “bigger than life.” He loved people and made friends quickly, never met a stranger and was fiercely loyal. He was a big man with an equally big heart and zeal for life. He enjoyed, among many other things, farming, flying, grilling, boating, fishing, but his greatest outdoor passion was wingshooting, especially doves and quail. This passion was shared by Papa Morris (Flynn Sr.), Flynn, David, and Trey and allowed them precious time together doing what they loved and left them with many of their fondest memories. Another of Flynn’s great loves was spending time in Montana with David and wife Debbie. David loved having him, too. Being the fixer-upper he was, Flynn would leave only after everything on David’s small ranch was in tiptop condition.
One of Flynn’s closest “friends”, essentially a big brother, was his slightly older cousin, John G. (Sonny) Morris, Jr., also from Geneva. Sonny and Flynn shared a special relationship that only grew stronger over the years. Flynn was in turn “big brother” to first cousins Newt, Barbara and Oodie Morris, who lost their father Fred Morris (twin brother of Flynn’s dad) to a heart attack at age 39. Flynn was a treasured friend to many. He will be missed, especially by his family that loved him dearly.
The family would like to express special thanks to the staff of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas for the compassion and care Flynn received during his treatment and peaceful transition surrounded by his loved ones. In lieu of flowers, please make any donation to M.D. Anderson at https://gifts.mdanderson.org/donate in Memory of Flynn Morris.
Services for the celebration of Flynn’s life will be held at the First United Methodist Church, 304 S. Academy St., Geneva, AL 36340 at 3:00 o’clock on Saturday, March 18, with Rev. Jake Brady and Rev. Dana Brady officiating. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the church beginning at 2:00 p.m.
