Gary D. Himelick, a dedicated veteran and compassionate caregiver, passed away on Tuesday, March 19th, 2024, at his home in Samson, AL, at the age of 75.
Gary was born on January 21st, 1949, in Marion, Indiana, to the late Verlin and Cora Mae Bass Himelick. His life was marked by service, beginning with his drafting into the military in 1969. Gary served his nation with honor during the Vietnam War until 1971, displaying bravery and valor that earned him both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. After his military service, Gary continued his commitment to serving others by dedicating 34 years to the Veteran Administration Hospital in Marion, Indiana, where he tirelessly cared for the nation’s veterans until his retirement.
Gary’s legacy of service extended beyond his professional life. He was a devoted husband of 32 years to his loving wife, Mona Himelick of Samson, AL. He is survived by his two brothers, Darrell Himelick of Seminole, FL, and Terry Himelick of Marion, IN; his sister, Patricia Campbell of Indiana; his daughter, Dana Adamson, and son-in-law, Steve Adamson, both of Marion, IN; his son, Les Himelick, and daughter-in-law, Lyndsey Himelick, both of Samson, AL; his daughters Anna Himelick of Paducah, KY, and Maria Himelick of Murray, KY; daughter, Debbie Barnes and son-in-law, Marty Barnes, both of Lebanon, IN. Gary was also a proud grandfather to 11 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He held a special place in his heart for his family friends, Richard and Debbie Brooks of Panama City, FL.
At Gary’s request, no services will be held and a celebration of life will be held at a later time. In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations can be made in his name to the American Cancer Society and the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Geneva, AL Chapter.
