Gary Wayne Lewis of Geneva, AL passed away on Saturday, December 26, 2020 in a Dothan hospital. He was 63 years old.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, January 2, 2021 at 10:00 a.m. in the chapel of Warren Holloway Ward Funeral Home in Geneva.
Gary was born in Geneva, AL on May 2, 1957 to the late William Donald and Rendie Clark Lewis. He accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior as a teenager while attending First Baptist Church in Geneva. After graduating from Geneva High School as part of the class of 1975, he enlisted and served in the Air Force. Upon his discharge, he returned home to work with his Dad. As his Dad’s health worsened, Gary sacrificed his job to become a full-time caregiver to him until he passed.
In 1993, Gary, along with his brother Kenneth, started Lewis Brothers Painting Plus. They contracted with businesses and private residents in and around Geneva for many years. In addition to his busy work schedule, Gary took responsibility to also care for his mother when her health began to decline. He faithfully did so until her death. He demonstrated his love of family by putting them first.
In more recent years, Gary loved spending time at Geneva Hardware and seeing his many friends there. He would go to the hardware store at least twice a day. A day was not complete without a visit to another one of his favorite hang-outs, the Porky Barn.
Gary could be found in front of his T.V. anytime during football season. He loved the game. So much so, he kept the Panther football stats for the coaches at Geneva High School for many years. He especially loved Alabama football and trash-talking his Auburn friends. He was also a racing fan and enjoyed Talladega events.
Gary was a kind-hearted soul who was generous to anyone in need. This compassion extended to animals as well. The dogs and cats that show up at his home are well fed and treated lovingly. He knew people had troubles and so he liked to joke around everywhere he went just to brighten someone’s day. He did not have any children of his own, but loved his nephews as if they were his.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his niece, April Lewis.
Gary is survived by one brother, Kenneth Lewis (Pat) of Geneva, AL; two nephews, Matthew Lewis (Jennifer) of Opelika, AL and Patrick Lewis of Tuscaloosa, AL; great niece, Libby Lewis of Opelika, AL; and partner, Cynthia Campbell of Geneva, AL.
