ASHFORD…Gene Hardy Whaley, a former resident of Ashford, died early Thursday morning, September 27, 2018, in the Clifford Chester Sims State V.A. Nursing Home in Panama City, Florida. He was 91.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 P.M. Saturday, September 29, 2018, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Mike Shirah officiating. Burial will follow in the Webb Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 2:00 until 3:00 P.M. Saturday in the mortuary in Headland.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Emerald Coast Hospice, 421 Oak Avenue, Panama City, Florida 32401.
Mr. Whaley was born and reared in Webb, Alabama, son of the late L.B. Whaley and Mary Mitchell Hardy Whaley. He was a graduate of the Houston County High School in Columbia. At an early age, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served his country during World War II. He lived most of his lifetime in Ashford where he was an active member of the Ashford United Methodist Church. Mr. Whaley was retired as the owner and operator of Whaley Hardware in Ashford. He was a member of the Masonic Order and was a licensed pilot. Mr. Whaley was preceded in death by his wife, Ruby Lee Avant Whaley, and a sister, Lou Ann Keel.
Surviving relatives include a daughter, Angela Whaley Livingston (Tony), and a son, Gene Whaley, Jr., all of Panama City Beach, FL; two granddaughters, Candice Livingston Maddox (Steve) and Christa Livingston Heinzelman (Scott); seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Sue Cadenhead (Rhett), Destin, FL.
