HEADLAND. . .George Beyer Fairchild, a resident of Headland, died Sunday, August 25, 2013, in the Signature HealthCARE of North Florida in Graceville. He was 86.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Tuesday, August 27, 2013, in the Holman-Headland Mortuary Chapel with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Tuesday at the mortuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland Lions Club, c/o Jerry Soules, 711 Holly Lane, Headland, AL 36345 or the First Baptist Church of Headland.


            Mr. Fairchild was a native of Minneapolis, Minnesota, son of the late Albert Lea Fairchild and Mabel Beatrice Beyer Fairchild. He enlisted in the U. S. Navy in 1945 and served his country during World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Wars. He received medals for his service to his country. He served on the USS Pine Island during the 1947 Antarctic Expedition. He retired in 1966 with the rank of Chief Petty Officer (ADRC) and moved to Headland. He formerly worked for the State of Alabama as a GED Instructor. He retired in June, 2012, from Ft. Rucker as an A &P helicopter inspector.


            Mr. Fairchild attended The University of Maryland, The University of Guam, Pensacola Junior College and Wallace Community College in Dothan. He later graduated from Troy State University with a B.S. Degree in Elementary Education and a Masters Degree in Education to teach reading. He was also a graduate of the Alabama Aviation & Technical College in Ozark.


            A member of the First Baptist Church of Headland, Mr. Fairchild was also a member of the Fleet Reserve, V.F.W. Post No. 87, Headland Lions Club, Brown’s Crossroads Masonic Lodge No. 529. Scottish Rite Valley of Minneapolis, active member of the Fleet Reserve Association Branch #386,  and Bryn Mawr Masonic Lodge No. 325 of Minneapolis, Minnesota. He was a member of the National Rifle Association, Headland Gun Club, the International Association of Machinists & Aerospace Workers, and the Dothan Landmarks Foundation. In his eighties, he completed the Tri States 100 on August 25, 2007, a 25 mile bicycle ride. He was an active blood donor, donating over thirty gallons of blood. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Sue Baxter Fairchild.


            Surviving relatives include three daughters, Rebecca Fairchild, Headland; Charlotte Liphart and husband, Robert Liphart, Hiram, GA; Theresa McGraw and husband, Dr. Christopher McGraw, Baudette, MN; a sister, Deloris Graham and husband, Bill, Bloomington, MN; two grandchildren, Nicholas McGraw and wife, April; and Patrick McGraw; two great-grandsons, John McGraw and James McGraw; sisters-in-law, Martha Raley and husband, Pat, Kinsey, AL; Leah Durkee and husband, Earl, Memphis, TN; and Robbie Baxter, Headland.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Nicholas McGraw, Patrick McGraw, Robert Liphart, Jimmy Baxter, Joel Laseter, and Charles Decker.
