ABBEVILLE. . .George Edward Lewis, a resident of Abbeville, died Monday afternoon, January 2, 2012, in a Dothan hospital. He was 68. 


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P. M. Thursday, January 5, 2012, in the First Baptist Church of Abbeville with Reverend Mike Whitt officiating and a eulogy to be given by Michael Hartzog. Entombment will follow on the family farm, L & L Farm, located on Hwy. 27 near Abbeville. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 5:00 until 7:00 P. M. Wednesday at the mortuary in Abbeville.             


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Abbeville “Playground Fund”, P.O. Box 606, Abbeville, AL. 36310.  


            Mr. Lewis was born and reared in Houston County, son of the late Fred D. Lewis and Johnnie Bell Dean Lewis. He lived in the Ashford area before moving to Abbeville in 1980. Mr. Lewis was member of the First Baptist Church of Abbeville. He was retired from APAC, Inc., (formerly Couch, Inc.) in 2007 as a construction superintendent. After his retirement, Mr. Lewis joined his son and daughter-in-law in the operation of Lewis, Inc. in Headland. He was preceded in death by a daughter in law, Dawn Hardy Lewis, a sister, Peggy Burnett and a brother-in-law, Manley Tolar.


            George loved his wife and family and his dogs, Hank and Gabi. He spent countless hours working with his cows and horses at the L & L Farm and also enjoyed the time he spent at the Cowikee Creek Resort on Lake Eufaula where he loved to fish.


            Surviving relatives include his loving and devoted wife of forty-nine years, Vivian Morris Lewis, Abbeville; a daughter, Daphne L. Cook, Loganville, GA; a son, George E. Lewis, II and wife, Kim, Tumbleton Community; ten grandchildren, Heather Smith, Ashlan Smith, Jerica Pinson and husband, Garrett, Jordan Lewis, Anna Hicks and husband, Cyle, Abby Lewis, Brandon Womack, Brent Womack, Michaela Tillery and RaeLeigh Baldwin; four great-grandchildren, Khyler Hannay, Joren Hannay, Eli Hicks and Bradyn Womack; a sister, Olivia Tolar, Pansey; brothers-in-law, Robert E. Burnett, Dothan; and Gary Morris and wife, Marilyn, Sneads, FL; special family, Wayne and Jean Scott, Abbeville; several nieces and nephews.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Joel McNeil, Jeff Cook, Manley Tolar, Jr., Charles Owens, Jordan Lewis, Keith Kirkland and Billy Thorne.
