George Harmon Stokes, Jr. left his earthly family to join his celestial family on April 27, 2022 in Lexington, Kentucky.  He was 74 years old.  George Harmon was born in Birmingham, Alabama to his parents Dr. G. Harmon Stokes and Elizabeth Farabee Stokes. He was raised and lived in Dothan, Alabama where he graduated from Dothan High School in 1965. He graduated from Marion Institute in 1967 and from Auburn University in 1970 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy.  Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army during the Vietnam War Era.  When honorably discharged, he returned to Auburn University to complete a Master’s Degree in Pharmacology in 1975. After working as a Pharmacist in Mobile, Alabama for a few years, George Harmon returned to Dothan, Alabama where he became the Pharmacy Director at Flowers Hospital.  He then became the Pharmacy Manager for the first local Albertson’s Grocery and Pharmacy. He retired in 2007 as the Pharmacy Manager for the local Bruno’s Inc. Pharmacy.


George Harmon was a long time member of Covenant United Methodist Church in Dothan, Alabama where he had taught Sunday School and been a member of the Chancel Choir.  He had been a member of the Dothan Lions Club and served for many years as the Communications Chairman for the National Peanut Festival. He held memberships in the Alabama Pharmacy Association and the Wiregrass Pharmacy Association and was a Lifetime Alumni Member of Phi Delta Chi. In 1984 George Harmon was recognized as an “Outstanding Young Man of America.”


George was an avid (Ham) Amateur Radio Operator (WA4MZL).  He was a member of the Wiregrass Amateur Radio Club where he served in several different positions as well as being a Lifetime Member of the American Radio Relay League.


After being a member of the Dothan Police Auxiliary for several years, he was asked to be a Civilian Member of the Dothan Police Department Bomb Squad. He thoroughly enjoyed his time with this group and made lifetime friends.  He also volunteered at Flowers Hospital and SARCOA after his retirement.


In 2018, George established the “George H. Stokes, Jr. Annual Scholarship Award for Excellence in Pharmacology” at the Alabama College of Osteopathic Medicine in Dothan, Alabama in order to honor deserving Medical Students who also excelled in the field of Pharmacology.


George Harmon was preceded in death by his parents.  He is survived by his wife Jane Hamm Stokes, his daughter Mary Elizabeth Stokes Ludwig (Libby) and her husband Jeffrey Ludwig, his grandchildren Harmon Alexander Ludwig (Alex) and Lucille Ann Ludwig (Lucy) all of Lexington, Kentucky.  Also surviving are his siblings, Betty Stokes Wiggins of Lexington, South Carolina, Brink (Cathy) Stokes of Warner-Robins, Georgia and Ernest Stokes of Dothan, Alabama.  Nieces and nephews also survive and sister-in-law Anne Hamm Garrison (Carl) of Sugarland, Texas.


A memorial service honoring the life of George Harmon will be held at Covenant United Methodist Church in Dothan, Alabama on Saturday, May 7, 2022 at 2 P.M. with Rev. Kyle Gatlin and Rev. Lynn Nesbitt officiating.  His family will receive visitors one hour prior to the service.


In lieu of flowers, donations in George Harmon’s memory may be sent to Covenant United Methodist Church, 3610 W. Main Street, Dothan, AL  36305, Davis Phinney Foundation for Parkinson’s , 357 S. McCaslin Blvd., Suite 105, Louisville, CO 80027, or to a charity of your choice.


Since his childhood Harmon’s special place on earth where he was the happiest was always at his family’s lake house on Compass Lake in Florida.  It was his wish that his remains be distributed there.  His wish will be granted at a later date.
