Geraldine C. (Gerri) Simmons was born in Escambia County, AL on June 1, 1932 and passed away Monday, February 8, 2016.


Gerri was preceded in death by her parents, Margaret (Peggy) Thompson Cooley Pickern, Alvin (Al) Pickern and C.C. (Chaffers) Cooley, her loving husband, Robert D. Simmons and her beautiful daughter, Cheryl Lynn Simmons. 


Mrs. Simmons was a resident of Dothan, AL for the past 9 years, but lived, worked, and raised her family for fifty years in Bowling Green, KY. After graduating from Pensacola High School in 1950, she attended Florida State University at Tallahassee, Tulane University and Touro Infirmary School of Nursing in New Orleans.


Gerri was active in her community and politics. She was a past member of Jayceettes and Lioness Club and did volunteer work at both the Girls Club and American Red Cross. Mrs. Simmons’s proudest accomplishments were serving as President of the Kentucky Federation of Republican Women from 1976-1978, as part of the Kentucky Delegation in 1972 and served on the Credentials Committee at the 1976 Republican National Convention in Kansas City, MO. Gerri also represented the Commonwealth of Kentucky at the Presidential Inaugurations of President Ronald Reagan and Vice President George H. Bush. She was named to “Who’s Who in American Politics” for 1977-78. She remained active in politics and was a member of the Houston County Republican Women while residing in Dothan, AL. 


Mrs. Simmons served the Community of Bowling Green as a Registered Nurse at City-County Hospital and later as an Occupational Health Nurse at Holley Carburetor Company. She was a Business Woman, Teacher and Housewife. She was a Manager at Bridges Aircraft Sales and Service in Bowling Green, Co-Owner of Nu-U, Inc., a Nutri-System Franchise, taught Nursing and Psychology in Bowling Green at Bowling Green Business College, and before retiring returned back to Nursing at The Medical Center on the Psychology Floor. Mrs. Simmons was a Charter Member of St. James United Methodist Church in Bowling Green, KY.


Survivors include two sons, Robert M. (Teeta) Simmons of Dothan, AL, Alvin Dean (Kelley) Simmons of Dothan, AL, Sister, June Wilson Turner of Pensacola, FL, two Nieces and a Nephew and several Great-Nieces and Nephews.


Visitation will be held at J.C. Kirby and Son Funeral Home, 820 Lovers Lane, Bowling Green, KY 42103 from 6 to 8 PM on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 and the Funeral will be held Wednesday, February 17, 2016 at 2:00 PM followed by burial at Fairview Cemetery in Bowling Green, KY.
