Gladys Harris Deal


 


Gladys Harris Deal, 97, a resident of Dothan, passed away Sunday, December 18, 2011 at Flowers Hospital.


 


Graveside services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at Gardens of Memory Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 3:00 until 3:45 p.m. following the graveside services. Memorial Services will follow at 4:00 p.m. with  Dr. Joe Johnson and The Rev. Sandy Lacey officiating and Byrd Funeral Home on West Main St. directing.


 


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the Dothan Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 6691, Dothan, AL, 36302.


 


Mrs. Deal was born April 2, 1914 in Slocomb to John and Maudie Lee Harris and was a 1932 graduate of Slocomb High School. She  later married Lester Lee Deal and moved to Dothan where she lived most of her life. Mrs. Deal was employed at Dothan Hosiery Mill (later Burlington Mills Inc.) for 35 years and later worked with TG & Y at Porter Square for 7 years. She also volunteered at Southeast Alabama Medical Center for 7 years and served on the Dothan Rescue Mission Board for many years. In 1945, Mrs. Deal joined Grandview Baptist Church where she remained active until the last few years and also enjoyed teaching the children.


 


Mrs. Deal is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, John Lee (Revonda) Deal of Dothan; three grandchildren, Jonja (Ken) Jacks, Sheddy Deal and Eddy (Krista) Deal; seven great-grandchildren; Maria (Kieler) Henry, Rachel Jacks, Angela Jacks, Trent Deal, Alex Deal, Trey Deal and Sofia Deal; three brothers, Jimmy Harris, Wallace (Bobbie) Harris, George (Joan) Harris; one sister, Dorothy Cozart; several nieces and nephews.
