Glenda Ellen McCathern, a resident of Dothan, passed away Monday night, March 28, 2022 at Westside Terrace. She was 80.
Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 1, 2022 at New Providence Baptist Church Cemetery with the Reverend Ray Kelley officiating and Glover Funeral Home directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m. on Friday prior to service time.
Mrs. McCathern was born April 10, 1941 in Wicksburg to Lennie Mae and Floyd Spence. She lived the early years of her life in Wicksburg before moving to Midland City in Dale County. Anyone who knew her was immediately empowered by her strong will. Mrs. McCathern is probably best known for her stellar parenting, her fierce work ethic, and her love for her family. She finished her race strong, leaving a legacy of faith and love to her family who loved her dearly.
In earlier years, Mrs. McCathern and her husband, Arvin W. McCathern, Sr. owned and operated The Chicken Kitchen and Seafood Restaurant in Dothan and Discount Groceries of Midland City. She was a member of First Methodist Church of Midland City.
She is predeceased by her parents, Lennie Mae and Floyd Spence, her husband Arvin W. McCathern, Sr., sisters, Gloria Riley and Twylia Parker and brother, Donnie Spence.
Survivors include her three children, Prudence M. Davis (John) of Bertha, AL, Arvin W. McCathern, Jr. (Angel) of Dothan and Audy D. McCathern (Maureen) of Chattanooga, TN; grandchildren, Samantha McCathern, Max McCathern, Lexie Davis and Carlie Davis; brother, Lamar Spence (Luvern) of Midland City; sister-in-law, Ida Sue Woodall of Ramer; brother-in-law, Doug Parker of Midland City; several nieces and nephews including Dennis Woodall of Ramer, Walden (Mitzi) Woodall of Grady, Jonathan “Tex” Woodall of Wetumpka, Doug Parker Jr. of Hartford, Keith and Wayne Riley of Midland City, Johanna Burney of North Carolina, Cherrie McKinnon of Dothan, Chris Spence of Dothan and Billie Lee Shewmake of Montgomery.
Pallbearers will be Max McCathern, Arvin McCathern, Jr., Audy McCathern, John Davis, Neal Starling and Doug Parker, Jr.
The family would like to express their appreciation and recognize all of the staff and nurses of Westside Terrace – Camilla Court and Kindred Hospice who compassionately cared for their loved one, as honoary pallbearers.
