Glenda Louise White Owens

Glenda Louise White Owens of Dothan, Alabama died Wednesday afternoon, July 30, 2014 after an extended heart illness. She passed away at her home surrounded by her family. She was 79 years of age.

The family will receive friends at Byrd Funeral Home in Dothan, Alabama on Friday evening August 1, 2014 from 5pm until 7pm. Funeral services will be held at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel on Saturday, August 2, 2014 at 11am with Brother Orelious Walker presiding. Family-only burial will follow at Memory Hill Cemetery on Highway 52 West in Dothan, Alabama.

Glenda was born on September 27, 1934 at Moody Hospital in Dothan, Alabama. She was the only child of the late Thomas Edgar (T.E.) White and Martha Dawkins White. She was a graduate of Dothan High School Class of 1952. She married her childhood sweetheart, Floyd Owens, on June 3, 1951 and had recently observed their 63rd wedding anniversary. Glenda was a wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother (and was soon to be a great-grandmother). During her lifetime, she excelled at cooking for the family, baking various layer cakes for the public (especially the Lane Cake with the real “Lane” in it), decorating wedding cakes, and competing in several national cooking competitions (National Peanut Festival, Southern Living, etc.).

Glenda dedicated her life to Almighty God Jehovah, and symbolized that dedication by water baptism on August 22, 1943. Her biblical research revealed the hope of a resurrection to a perfect life in an earthly paradise. She was one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and had spent many hours in the worldwide preaching work telling her neighbors about God’s promises for the future through the realization of His Kingdom rule. Additionally, she studied the Bible with several interested persons showing them God’s plan to restore the earth to a paradise as verified by an examination of the Holy Scriptures. She is sleeping in death faithfully awaiting that assured resurrection. She was a full-time minister in the door-to-door witnessing work from the time of her marriage to the birth of her first son. Later, she regularly participated in the witnessing work while fulfilling her duties as wife and mother of three sons.

She is predeceased by Thomas Edgar White and Martha Dawkins White (her parents), by George Carter Dawkins and Annie Mae Owen Dawkins (her maternal grandparents), by Thomas Valentine White and Mary Magdalyn Green White (her fraternal grandparents), and by Thomas Paul Owens (her middle son).

She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Floyd Owens. Survivors include her sons, Stephen Floyd (Kay) Owens and Timothy Glen (Katy) Owens as well as her deceased son’s (Thomas Paul Owens’) widow, Helen Beard Owens. Also surviving are grandchildren, Zebulan Graham Owens, Amanda Suzanne (Owens) Gant, Jackson Thomas Owens, and Anna Sophia Owens; an upcoming great-grandchild, Felicity Autumn Gant is expected to arrive in September.

The family wishes to express their overflowing gratitude to the nurses and staff of Gentiva Hospice for all the professional, competent and compassionate care that they rendered to Glenda. Adjectives don’t exist that convey the level of caring that these superior caregivers displayed.
