A celebration of life will be held on Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 11:00am in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Alan Bryan officiating. Burial will be held in Sunset Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 from 5:00pm until 7:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to be made in his honor to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinsons Research at P.O Box 5014, Hagerstown, Maryland. 21741 or to the Cloverdale Baptist Campus Upgrade Fund at 806 Dexter Street, Dothan, AL 36301
Gordon C. “Wren” Layton, age 88, of Dothan, Alabama passed away peacefully at his home on March 4, 2023. His battle with Parkinsons Disease over the past several years showed his steadfast determination to not let this disease define him.
Wren was born on August 7, 1934 in Pansey, Alabama to the late Gordon and Jewell Layton Cook. He was well known in the building and construction community from his 44 years working at West Building Materials. In his freetime, he enjoyed working in his yard. When his health permitted, he attended Cloverdale Baptist Church.
Survivors include his daughter, Lisa Kelly, his son Michael G. Layton (Robin), grandchildren, Jamie Kelly (Carrie), Jessica Welch (Chad), Madison Rivenbark (Stewart), great grandchildren, Mabrie and Brackin Welch, Addyson, Maddox, and Bentlie Kelly, Keller Rivenbark, and his most loving and devoted, Zoey.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Barbara Jean Layton, brother, G.W. Layton, sister, Betty Hardy, and granddaughter, Lacy J. Layton.
