Grace  Carole  “Bebe” Beasley  Williams


 


COLUMBIA. . . Grace Carole Beasley was born on February 17, 1935 in Blakely, Georgia to the late Claude Lee Beasley and Ida Harvin Palmer Beasley. She passed away on January 14, 2019, at Sumter Health and Rehab in York, Alabama.


            From infancy she was known as “Bebe”, a nickname given to her by her big brother, John. Bebe attended school in Columbia, Alabama and married Samuel P. Williams, Jr. on June 8, 1954. They had two children, Dianna Ree and Joshua Harvin.


            Bebe lived the majority of her life in Columbia except for the years she spent in Bainbridge, Ga, and Spartanburg, S.C. following her husband in his coaching career. When they returned to Columbia in 1973, she began working at the Bank of Columbia, and later at Cedar Springs Federal Credit Union (Great Southern) and at Joseph Farley Nuclear Plant. Bebe worked tirelessly to make Columbia a beautiful little town and was rewarded for her work with a proclamation from Gov. Don Siegelman thanking her for her efforts. She attended First Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and taught G.A.’s for many years. Bebe was active in the Columbia Historical Society and served as editor of the local “Columbia Blotter”.


            She leaves behind her daughter, Dianna Williams Upchurch, her son, Joshua Harvin Williams (Suzanne Studstill); her grandsons, Robert Garner Upchurch (Kathleen Traeger), Samuel Harvin Upchurch (Katie McAlister) and John Darby Upchurch; her granddaughters, Sydney Suzanne Foshee, Greeley Foshee Weeks (Taylor); her great grandchildren Caroline Elizabeth Upchurch, William Garner Upchurch, Anna Gaston Stephens, Robert Traeger Stephens; her brother and sister-in-law, John Palmer Beasley, Sr. and Jean Craddock Beasley, her niece Claudia Beasley Gamble (Brian), her nephews, John P. Beasley, Jr. (Kathy) and Sidney Thomas Beasley (Jane Ellen), her great nieces, Audrey Virginia Gamble, Emily Gamble Bass (McKinley) and Kathryn L. Beasley; great nephews, Clifton Thomas Beasley and Andrew Ross Beasley.


            She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, her son-in-law, Robert Edward Upchurch and her sister-in-law, Barbara Latiolais Beasley.


            The funeral service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Columbia on Saturday, January 19, 2019, at 11:00 A.M. with Pastor Vann Cooley and Reverend Joey Hudspeth officiating. Burial will follow in the Columbia City Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary.  Her grandsons, nephews and great nephews will be serving as pallbearers.
