Juanita Varnum


Juanita “Granny” Varnum, a resident of Dothan, died Sunday night, September 25, 2016. She was 89.


Funeral services will be held 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 28, 2016 at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Stacy Stafford officiating. Burial will follow in New Harmony Free Will Baptist Church Cemetery with Byrd Funeral Home on West Main Street directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 9-9:45 a.m. on Wednesday.


Mrs. Varnum was born on September 2, 1927 in Houston County to Harmon and Annie Hall Fears and lived most of her life here. She began her nursing career at Frazier-Ellis Hospital and worked at SAMC, Flowers Hospital, Wesley Manor and also private duty nursing before retiring from Extendicare Health Care Center. She loved fishing and wrestling. Mrs. Varnum was an active member of Southside Baptist Church.


Mrs. Varnum is predeceased by her parents, her husband of 54 years, Joseph E. Varnum, two special sisters and a brother.


She is survived by her children, Marilyn and Mike Davis of Dothan, Mandy and Johnny Odom of Headland, a foster daughter, Debbie Peterman of Dothan, Jeff and Elaine Varnum of Tallahassee, FL; three grandchildren, Michael Davis (Ann), Jeffery Varnum (Joy) and Kelly Varnum (Phil); seven grandchildren, Alex Davis, Triston Jones, Baylee Hall, Kaleb Hall, Kinzee Hall, Preston Childs and Tre’ Varnum; a brother-in-law, Royce Varnum and several special nieces and nephews.
