Gregory Lee Smith, a longtime resident of Cottonwood, passed away Sunday, May 28, 2023, after a brief illness.
Greg was born on August 1, 1967 in Fort Rucker, Alabama to the late Mike Smith, Jr and Barbara Shadden Smith. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Greater Zion Baptist Church. Greg graduated from Cottonwood High School in 1985. Upon graduation, he served three years in the United States Army, followed by eleven years active reserve. He became a Deputy Sheriff with the Houston County Sheriffs’ Department from 1991-2000. He began to work at Southern Company in 2000 and retired as a Captain in 2022. Greg received a Bachelor of Science in Business and an Associates of Science in Computer and Information Science from Faulkner University. While maintaining a full-time job, he launched Greg Smith Enterprises and opened a Subway franchise in his hometown of Cottonwood, and thereafter opened the Dothan’s first Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, (East location) in 2016, followed by his second location, Dickey’s Barbeque Pit (West) in 2022, with his diligent wife; business partner, Kim, alongside him. After full retirement from Southern Company, he began to establish his third location, Dickey’s Barbecue Pit, (Daleville); with plans of opening this past Memorial Day weekend. However, the Lord called His faithful servant home.
He is preceded in death by his parents and sister, Valerie McKinnie. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving, devoted wife Kimberly Jackson Smith, children, Kimberly Smith, Gregory Smith, Jr, Jacquez Jackson, Shun’Tavius Spencer and Aden Jackson. Grandchildren, Jayden Cox, Kevin Smith, Ariyonah Smith, and Lila Smith; sister Debra Coachman (Larry), brothers Mike Smith III (Lillie), Gerald Smith (Kelly), Father-In-Law Donald Jackson, Mother-In-Law Robbie Jackson; Brother-In-Law Dez’Kendrick Perry, Sister-In-Law Passion Jackson, a friend who became a sister, Cassandra White, and a host loving nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Scott Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements, with a wake from 4 to 6 pm Friday June 2nd, at Scott Funeral Home and Funeral held at Watermark Church, Ashford Alabama. Body will lie in state at 10 a.m. and Funeral at 11 a.m.
