DOTHAN. . .Guy F. Medley, a former resident of Dothan, died late Thursday afternoon, June 6, 2024, in the Henry County Health & Rehabilitation Facility in Abbeville. He was 86.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, June 9, 2024, in the First United Methodist Church of Dothan with Dr. Karl Stegall, Reverend Greg Brown and Dr. David Saliba officiating. A private graveside service will follow in Memory Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Sunday in the church parlor. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Karl Stegall Seminary Scholarship Endowment Foundation, P.O. Box 241661, Montgomery, AL 36124; or Respite Care Ministry of the First United Methodist Church, 1380 West Main Street, Dothan, AL 36301.      


            Mr. Medley was born in Fordyce, Arkansas and was reared in Bonifay, Florida, son the late William Fletcher Medley and Esther Lee Parrish Medley. He was a 1955 graduate of Holmes County High School where he was a member of the marching band. Mr. Medley attended Chipola Community College where he received an Associate’s Degree in Finance and Law. Mr. Medley served his country in the Florida National Guard. Mr. Medley graduated from the Banking School of the South at Louisiana State University. He retired as Chairman of the Board of SunSouth Bank in Dothan. He was formerly employed by the Bank of Bonifay and served as President of the Bonifay Kiwanis Club, President of the Bonifay Quarterback Club and Chairman of the Board of Stewards of the Bonifay United Methodist Church. He moved to Abbeville in 1972 where he served as President of the Henry County Bank and later as President and Chairman of the Board of BankSouth. While a resident of Abbeville, he served as Lay Leader of Abbeville United Methodist Church, as President of the Abbeville Lions Club, Chairman of the Abbeville Chamber of Commerce, Chairman of the Abbeville Development Corporation and coached PeeWee football. After moving to Dothan in 1993, Mr. Medley served on the Board of Directors of the Southeast Alabama Child Advocacy Center. He was a member of the Dothan-Houston County Chamber of Commerce and was also a member of the Dothan Rotary Club. He served as Chairman of the Board for the Dothan Area Botanical Gardens. Mr. Medley also volunteered for the Special Needs Program at First United Methodist Church. He was a co-founder of the Suddenly Single Program at Wallace Community College. A member of the First United Methodist Church of Dothan, he formerly served as Chairman of the Finance Committee and as a Lay Leader. Mr. Medley was a member of the Troy University Community Band and the Dothan Moonlighters. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Ann Sammons Medley and a brother, Donald Gilmer Medley.


            Surviving relatives include two daughters, Gina Medley (Debbie), Abbeville; and Barbara Medley Whiddon (Stanley), Headland; two sons, Mike Medley (Lanora), Abbeville; and Don Medley (John), St. Petersburg, FL; a sister, Carolyn Medley Matthias (Roy), Bonifay, FL; a brother, Ray Medley (Margaret), Bonifay, FL; a sister-in-law, Carolyn Medley, Bonifay, FL; grandchildren, Margaret Ann Medley (Andi), James-Michael Sammons Medley (Jess), Christopher Guy Medley, Fletcher Whiddon, Wyatt Whiddon (Katie), Vinny Somma (Amaris), Amber Somma, Edde Somma (Audree), and Sylvia Somma; great-grandchildren, Laken Whiddon, Ayvinn Somma and Brynn Somma.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be the grandchildren. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be the Moonlighters and Guy and Ann’s Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church.
