HAROLD S. (BOOTS) MURPHY
ASHFORD, ALABAMA. . .Harold Sanford (Boots) Murphy, a resident of the Pleasant Plains community, between Headland and Columbia, died Friday morning, August 16, 2013, at his home.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 A.M. (C.D.T.), Monday, August 19, 2013, in the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church with Reverend Ricky Sowell officiating and a eulogy to be given by a daughter, Vicky Murphy. Holman-Headland Mortuary, Headland Alabama, is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:00 until 11:00 A.M. Monday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, c/o Jerry Knowles, 5373 East County Road 22, Headland, AL 36345, or Gentiva Hospice, P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL 36302.
Boots Murphy was born and reared in the Pleasant Plains community, son of the late Christopher C. Murphy and Lucy Gamble Murphy. He lived in Tallahassee, Florida twenty-six years before returning to the Pleasant Plains community, also known as Gambletown, in 1983. Boots was retired from the United States Bureau of Prisons in Tallahassee. He was a member of the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church, (land which was donated by Boots’ maternal grandfather, Thomas Gamble), a life member of the BPOE Lodge No. 937 in Tallahassee, and was also a member of the Columbia Masonic Lodge. Boots was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret Dykes Murphy, and a brother, James A. Murphy.
Surviving relatives include three daughters, Gloria Murphy, Tallahassee, FL; Vicky Murphy, Atlanta, GA; and Diane Chapman (David), Tallahassee, FL; a brother, Tommy Dan Murphy (Emily), Dothan; four grandchildren, John Painter (Christina), Michael Painter, Patrick Murphy Chapman (Mandy), and Brian Chapman; four great-grandchildren, Dakota Painter, Joshua Painter, Hayden Murphy Chapman, and Parker Chapman.
The family would like to thank Gentiva Hospice for their care of “Mr. Boots”. The family would also like to thank the Pleasant Plains community for their overwhelming love and support.
