HEADLAND. . .Hazel Godfrey Chafin, a resident of Headland, died Sunday, March 29, 2015, at her home. She was 96.
Funeral services will be held at 11:30 A.M Wednesday, April 1, 2015, in the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church with Reverend Danny Bynum and Reverend Kenneth Hale officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 10:30 until 11:30 A.M. Wednesday in the church sanctuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Pleasant Plains Baptist Church “Missions Fund”, c/o Jerry Knowles, 5373 East County Road 22, Headland, AL 36345.
Mrs. Chafin was born and reared in Oglethorpe, Georgia, daughter of the late Mary Elizabeth Hardman Godfrey. She moved to Dothan in 1960 where she lived until moving to the Pleasant Plains community, between Headland and Columbia, in 1980. Mrs. Chafin was a certified instructor of workers with children in the church. She led conferences, both in state and out of state, for the Alabama Baptist State Convention, and Sunday School and State Training Boards. For several years, Mrs. Chafin was recruited by the Southern Baptist Convention to teach instructors on the use of current teaching procedures at Glorieta, New Mexico and Ridgecrest, North Carolina. Mrs. Chafin was preceded in death by her husband, Reverend John H. Chafin, Sr., an infant daughter, Vera Chafin, a son-in-law, Dean Byrd, and a brother, John Mell Godfrey.
Surviving relatives include two daughters, Charlotte Walker (Lee), Bryan, Texas; and Jackie Byrd, Birmingham; two sons, John Chafin, Jr., Headland; and Larry Chafin (Laura), Dothan; fifteen grandchildren, thirty two great-grandchildren, and sixteen great-great-grandchildren.
