Hazel Orlean Hulsey Lumsden, a cherished mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, at the age of 92 in Dothan, Alabama, after a dignified journey with dementia. Born on September 20, 1932, in Piedmont, Alabama, to the late Sammie and Grace Hulsey, Hazel's life was marked by dedication, service, and a deep love for her family. Hazel's life was one of unwavering love, service, and grace. Her memory will be treasured and kept alive through the stories and lives of those she touched. She leaves behind a legacy of resilience, kindness, and an unshakeable faith that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Hazel Orlean Hulsey Lumsden's presence will be deeply missed, but the impact of her life's work and the memories shared will continue to resonate for generations to come.
Graduating with the high school class of 1950, Hazel embarked on a life of adventure and commitment when she married Thomas O. Lumsden and embraced the life of an Army wife. Together, they raised two daughters, and their family saw many parts of the world, from Fort Knox, Kentucky to the diverse landscapes of Germany, with stops at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and Fort Benning, Georgia.
While living in Columbus, Georgia, Hazel furthered her education at Massey Business College, after which she embarked on a fulfilling career with the Muscogee County School District. Her ambition and dedication to her career led her to the Federal Civil Service at Fort Benning, where she served with distinction for over two decades as an Executive Secretary. Her professionalism and warmth left a lasting impression on the many Directors she supported.
Even after retiring from full-time work, Hazel's thirst for knowledge and her desire to contribute to her community led her back to higher education at Columbus Technical College. There, her exemplary performance as a student earned her a role in the admissions office, where she continued to inspire and assist students and faculty alike.
Hazel's faith was the cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted member of Southside Baptist Church and a long-term active member of Edgewood Baptist Church, where she served and worshipped until she moved to Dothan, Alabama, to be closer to her family. In Dothan, she found a new spiritual home at Covenant United Methodist Church.
Her love extended beyond her faith and into her everyday actions. Hazel was a gifted cook, whose recipes will live on in the hearts and kitchens of those she loved. She was also a talented seamstress, crafting beautiful garments with the same care and attention she gave to every aspect of her life. Her pets, friends, and family were the recipients of her boundless love and generosity.
Hazel's legacy is carried on by her loving daughters, Sandra Aycock and her husband Joe, and Teresa Strickland and her husband, Michael; grandson, Samuel and great grandson, Michael Strickland; her sister, Lois Robinson; and numerous nieces and nephews from the Robinson and Lumsden families. Her lifelong friendship with Anna Wagner stands as a testament to the depth of her loyalty and affection.
The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Wesley Place on Honeysuckle and Gentiva Hospice. Their compassionate care and support were a beacon of light for Hazel and her loved ones throughout her journey with dementia.
