HELEN KIRKLAND PRICE


NEWVILLE. . .Helen Kirkland Price, a resident of Homewood, Alabama, formerly of Newville, Alabama, died Tuesday morning, February 19, 2013, in the Brookdale Place at University Park, in Homewood. She was 90.


            Private graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday, February 21, 2013, in the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery with Dr. Mike Shirah officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 1:50 P.M. Thursday in the sanctuary of the Newville Baptist Church.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Newville Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 13, Newville, AL 36353.


            Mrs. Price was born and reared in the Oakey Grove community of Henry County, daughter of the late Ezra Kirkland and Byrd Whitehead Kirkland. She received a B.S. Degree in Social Studies and Physical Education from Auburn University and also attended the University of Tennessee and the University of Old Mexico. Mrs. Price retired in 1981 as Social Studies and Physical Education teacher at Headland High School after thirty years employment. She formerly served as President of the Henry County Teacher’s Association and Delta Kappa Gamma and also served as sponsor of the National Honor Society and the Beta Club. Mrs. Price was a member of the National Education Association and the Alabama Education Association. She was a member of the Newville Baptist Church where she taught Sunday School for many years. Mrs. Price lived in Newville from 1950 until moving to Homewood in 2009.


            Mrs. Price often stated: “Only one thing was important in my life, if I made a positive influence in one person’s life.”


            Mrs. Price was preceded in death by her husband, John Henry Price, two brothers, Rudolph Kirkland and Mitchell Kirkland, and her step-mother, Irene M.H. Kirkland.


            Surviving relatives include her son, John Henry Price, II and wife, Gail Price, Auburn, AL; her grandson, Dr. John Henry (Jay) Price, III and wife, Dr. Julie Price, a great-grandson, Henry Price, all of Homewood.

Mrs. Price was one of those teachers that helped to mold young people into productive adults. Mrs. Price thank you for what you did for me and many others at HHS. You made a difference. Art Solomon
