Helen Mathis, 83, of Dothan passed away Thursday, July 26, 2012 at Extendicare Health Center.
Funeral services will be held 2 pm Sunday, July 29, 2012 at First Baptist Church with Dr. Johnny Fain and Rev. Bob Gross officiating. A reception will follow in the church parlor for family and friends. Memorials may be made in Mrs. Mathis’s memory to: Alzheimer Resource Center, P.O. Box 1170, Dothan, Alabama 36302 or to First Baptist Church Missions Fund, 300 West Main Street, Dothan, Alabama 36301.
Mrs. Mathis was born July 15, 1929 in Montgomery, Alabama and moved to Dale County at an early age. She graduated from Wicksburg High School and resided in Orlando, Florida from 1963 until returning to Dothan in 1971. She was employed with Southtrust Bank for several years until her retirement in 1989. Mrs. Mathis loved to travel, was an avid Auburn Tigers fan and a member of First Baptist Church of Dothan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Verbon Mathis and her parents, Jimmy and Evelyn Hartzog.
Survivors include her daughters, Paula Mathis Wages (Alan), Denise Mathis DeVane (Sam); her grandchildren, Matthew Wages (Courtney), Nolan Wages (Olivia), Benjamin Wages and Sam Mathis DeVane; her great-grandchildren, Kate, Hays and Andrew Wages.
Serving as active pallbearers will be Matthew Alan Wages, Nolan Andrew Wages, Benjamin Mathis Wages, Sam Mathis DeVane, Marion Grady Hartzog, Robert Luke Hartzog, Iley Fred Kent, Jr. and Kevin Jason Kent.
