Helen Virginia Owens Bynum of Enterprise passed away on Thursday, January 10, 2013, at the age of 82
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 A.M. on Saturday, January 12 at the First United Methodist Church of Enterprise where Helen has been a member since moving back to Enterprise. The Revs. Rob West, Danny Gilroy and Danny Bynum will officiate. The family will receive relatives and friends at Searcy Funeral Home on Friday, January 11, from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M. A family graveside service will be held at Meadowlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Geneva, 309 S. Commerce St., Geneva, AL 36340 or First United Methodist Church of Enterprise 217 S. Main St. Enterprise, AL 36330.
Helen was born in Dale County on July 22, 1930, to J.D. and Viney Ducker Owens. She graduated from Coffee County High School and married James L. Bynum, Jr. She was a nurse who trained and briefly worked at Gibson Hospital. For twenty-three years, she was a nurse in Dr. William Blakeney’s Medical Clinic in Geneva. After Dr. Blakeney’s retirement, Helen worked for several years as a private duty nurse and also worked at Hartford Retirement Village.
She and James raised their children in Geneva where they were very dedicated to serving their Lord with their many friends at the First Baptist Church of Geneva. They had been married for forty-eight years at James’ death in 1997. Following James’ death, Helen lived for six years at Panama City Beach and had lived at The Baptist Village in Dothan for nine years before coming to Enterprise Health and Rehabilitation in February of 2012.
In addition to her husband and her parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, J.W., Ralph and Lomax Owens; and a sister, Betty Jean Valentine.
She is survived by her son, Rex Bynum and wife, Kathy of Enterprise and her daughter, Sheila Bynum Brown and husband, Tommy of Tuscaloosa. Survivors also include three grandchildren, Amanda Bynum Marshall and husband, Lee of Enterprise, Michelle Brown Criswell and husband, Stephen of Clinton, AL and Derek Bynum of Enterprise; four great-grandchildren, Jackson and Kamryn Bailey, Mary Kathryn Marshall and Hayden Criswell; three sisters, Ruby Bynum, Willene Teate and husband, Jimmy all of Dothan and Bobbie Myers of Fayetteville, AR; brother, Jerry Owens of Enterprise; sisters-in-law, Elaine Owens of Coffee Springs, Pat Howell of Enterprise; and numerous nieces and nephews.
