COLUMBIA. . .Dr. Henry Drexal Hughes, a resident of Columbia, died Wednesday morning, October 23, 2024, in a Dothan Hospital. He was 76.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, October 27, 2024, in the Ebenezer Baptist Church with Reverend Don Tew officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. Sunday in the church sanctuary. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to a favorite charity.
Henry Hughes was born and reared in Houston County, near Webb, son of the late Enoch Edell Hughes and Toye Cook Hughes. He was a 1967 graduate of Houston County High School in Columbia. Henry served his country in the U. S. Army during the Vietnam War era. He attended Carolina Bible College where he received a Doctorate in Theology. Henry was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. He was retired from General Telephone in Dothan, AL and Concord Telephone in Concord, North Carolina. After retirement, Henry was employed by 21st Century Oncology as a patient transporter. He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Kris Hughes, three brothers, Keith Hughes, Damon Hughes and Reginald “Buddy” Hughes and a sister, Glenda Hughes Dotson.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Kathleen Barber Hughes, two daughters, Gail Hughes Donaldson (Andy), Montgomery; and Samantha Hughes Cook (Kevin), Columbia; a son, Henry Drexal Hughes, II, (Seleana), Columbia; a step-daughter, Jocelyn MacRae, Kenmore, NY; and a step-son, James MacRae (Jean), Charlotte, NC; sisters, Era Womack, Cottonwood; Cathy McCullough and Vicki Turner, both of Webb, AL; two brothers, Dennis Hughes (Faith), Ashford; and Rodney Hughes, Columbia; grandchildren, Emma Donaldson, Ava Donaldson, Brook Hughes, Brianna Hughes, Austin Hughes, J. D. Cook, Cooper Cook; step-grandchildren, Cassandra Porto (Mark), Zachary McKim and Alex McRae; several great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
