HEADLAND…Herbert Wayne Laye, a resident of Bay Minette, Alabama, formerly of Headland, died early Friday morning, September 21, 2018, in the William F. Green Veterans Home in Bay Minette. He was 91.
Graveside services will be held 3:00 P.M. Monday, September 24, 2018, in Gardens of Memory with Reverend Charles W. Price, Jr. officiating. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of the arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:45 P.M. Monday at the mortuary.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Headland United Methodist Church “Building Fund”, 103 West King Street, Headland, AL 36345.
Herbert Wayne Laye was born in Pinckard, Alabama and reared in Midland City, son of the late Andrew Jackson Laye and Ruth Byrd Laye. He served his country in the United States Army during World War II. Mr. Laye retired as the owner and operator of Headland Oil Company. He formerly served two terms as a Headland City Councilman and later as its Mayor. For many years, Mr. Laye was involved with the youth summer athletic programs in Headland as a coach. He was a member of the Headland United Methodist Church and the Curry Woods Mens’ Bible Class. Mr. Laye was preceded in death by his wife, Louise Guilford Laye; his sister, Sybil Roland; and his brother, Douglas Laye.
Surviving relatives include his daughter, Melissa Laye Stewart (Anthony), Dothan; two sons, Ronnie Laye (Lisa), Headland, and Doug Laye, Sandestin, FL; a sister-in-law, Gail Laye, Columbus, GA; three grandchildren, Ron Laye (Kalli), Ranah Dozier (Mitch) and Hannah Strength (Jon); and seven great-grandchildren, Annie Laye, Griffin Laye, Owen Laye, Addison Laye, Ansley Kate Drummond, Mary Knox Dozier, Jay Dozier.
