Herman Floyd Troha

Herman Floyd Troha, a resident of Dothan, passed away on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at his home following an extended illness. He was 85 years young, and through his belief in God’s love and grace and acceptance of Jesus as his Savior, he was called to his forever home.

A celebration of life service will be held in Dothan, AL at 2 pm on Sunday, November 20, 2022 at Trinity Lutheran Church, 105 Luther Way, Dothan, AL 36301 with Rev. Mark Kocsis officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday evening from 6-8 pm for his visitation at Sunset Funeral Home. A second celebration of life service will be held at 2 pm EST on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at Allenhurst Presbyterian Church, 30 Church St., Allenhurst, Georgia 31301 with Rev. Ben Beasley officiating. Burial will follow in Allenhurst Presbyterian Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Allenhurst Presbyterian Church on Wednesday from 1-2 pm. Memorial contributions may be made to Allenhurst Presbyterian Church or Trinity Lutheran Church.

Herman was born on April 24, 1937 in Allenhurst, GA. His father, Frank Troha, came to the United States from Yugoslavia in 1904 and signed the book at Ellis Island. Frank worked for Henry Ford in Georgia. Frank met Herman’s mother, Hansie, at a community dance in Georgia, and they married and resided there. Herman was one of eleven children. Growing up in a two-bedroom home with his nine brothers and one sister fostered tremendous love. He graduated from Bradwell High School where he was a 4-letterman athlete in basketball, track, football, and baseball. Upon graduation, he enlisted with the National Guard where he served for several years, following the tradition of his band of brothers who all dedicated time to U.S. military service.

After his service time, Herman worked for Costal Utilities in Hinesville, GA. He married Mary Hackbarth in 1964 and they resided in the areas of Hinesville and Savannah, GA. In 1973, they relocated to the Dothan area where he worked in commercial roof deck construction. In this career, he left his handprints all over the southeast at hundreds of schools, hospitals, and other major corporations. In 1994, Herman began a career as a truck driver and drove for more than 26 years, many alongside his teammate, Troy Reetz, until his retirement in 2020. He served as an Elder and volunteered in many offices at Trinity Lutheran Church, including President of the Lutheran Layman League. He was a member of the VFW and the Elks Lodge. His servant’s heart made countless contributions including hosting the Annual Widow’s Luncheon at Trinity.

Herman worked very hard to support his family, and he considered the graduation of his three daughters at Auburn University to be one of his greatest accomplishments. His moments of recreation included golfing, bowling, boating, playing cards with his family, listening to gospel music, and enjoying watching football games of the Georgia Bulldogs and Auburn Tigers. While he enjoyed these hobbies, spending time with his family and serving the Lord brought him the greatest joy! He was the biggest cheerleader for his daughters and grandchildren, supporting their faith, education, sports, and unique talents. He expressed his sincere gratitude for his loving wife daily. He was blessed by her most devoted love, support, and care, and their 58 years together holds beautiful memories that will be forever cherished.

Herman was a faithful, devoted, and loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. He is survived by his wife, Mary Troha; his 3 daughters, Donna Troha Reetz, Cathy Marie Troha, Deborah Troha Reetz (James Coleman); his 5 grandchildren, Parker Troha Reetz, Savannah Danielle Reetz, Antonio Richard Troha, Connor Floyd Troha, and Riley Madison Reetz; his brother, Lawrence “Butch” (Sue) Troha; his sister, Joan (Bill) Sandmaier; his sisters-in-law, Jan, Ditha, Earline, and Aline, and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
