Mr. Hubert Monroe Branch of Samson passed away peacefully at his residence on Friday, October 31, 2014. He was 89. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, November 2, 2014 at New Prospect Baptist Church in Marl, Ala. with the Reverends Elbert Smith and Dickie McAllister officiating. Janice Crews will deliver the eulogy. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with Pittman Funeral Home of Geneva directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Geneva on Saturday, November 1, 2014 from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to the New Prospect Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 579 N. County Road 19, Samson, AL 36477.
Mr. Branch was born in Samson, Ala. on April 19, 1925 to the late James H. and Minnie E. Ashley Branch. He was also preceded in death by five siblings, Nannie Mae Branch, Carl Branch, Irene Yohn, Lelia Bell Powell and Ivey Kilpatrick. He was a faithful member and Sunday School Teacher at New Prospect Baptist Church for fifty years. He served in the US Navy in both the European and Asian Theaters during WWII.
Following the war he married the love of his life, Helen Dyess Branch, in 1947. He was a member of Samson Masonic Lodge 624 and the American Legion for many years. Mr. Branch was a renowned farmer and gardener. He also retired from Civil Service. His hands were rarely idle.
He is survived by his wife of sixty-seven years, Helen Branch; daughter, Janie Howell (Jerome) of Samson; son, William F. “Billy” Branch (Virginia) of Dothan; sister, Hazel Grimes (Dykes) of Samson; four grandsons, Jeromy Howell (Sabrina) of Alpharetta, Ga., Jason Howell (Heather) of Pell City, Ala., Blake Branch of Nashville, Tenn., and Garrett Branch of Birmingham; three great grandchildren, Kaitlyn Elizabeth Howell, Brayden James Howell, both of Alpharetta, Ga., and Kayson Alaina Howell of Pell City, Ala.; lifelong friends, Hubert and Foy Childs of Samson; many nieces and nephews and other extended family.
