HUGO  BLACK  BETHUNE


TUSCALOOSA, ALABAMA…..Hugo Black Bethune, a resident of Tuscaloosa, Alabama, died early Wednesday afternoon, April 10, 2013 in a Birmingham hospital. He was 86.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, April 13, 2013, in the Holman-Abbeville Mortuary Chapel with Reverend Marquis Wingard officiating. Graveside services, with military rites, will follow in the Abbeville Memorial Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:00 until 2:00 P.M. at the mortuary in Abbeville.


            Flowers will be accepted or memorial contributions may be made to the American Stroke Association, National Center, 7272 Greenville Avenue, Dallas, TX 75231.


            Mr. Bethune was born and reared in Abbeville, Alabama, son of the late William Calvin (W.C.) Bethune and Louise Roberts Bethune. He enlisted in the United States Navy while a student in the eleventh grade at Abbeville High School and served his country during World War II. Upon discharge from the Navy, Mr. Bethune returned to Abbeville where he completed his high school education. He enrolled in Troy University and later received a B.S. Degree in Agricultural Education from Auburn University. Mr. Bethune lived in Eutaw, Alabama before moving to Tuscaloosa in 1990. He retired from the U.S. Soil Conservation Service as a Soil Conservationist in Eutaw in Greene County, Alabama. Mr. Bethune was also self-employed as a building contractor in Tuscaloosa. He formerly served as President of the Eutaw Lions Club and was a member of the Abbeville United Methodist Church. Mr. Bethune was preceded in death by his brother, Dr. Glen Roberts Bethune.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Janelle Battles Bethune, Tuscaloosa, AL; a son, William Clay Bethune, Atlanta, GA; a sister, Patricia Chaires;  two nieces, Kim Bethune Rioux and Kristy Bethune Howe.
