HEADLAND…Ida Deal McGee Knowles, a resident of Headland, died Friday morning, February 5, 2016, at her home. She was 94.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. Sunday, February 7, 2016, in the Worship Center of the First Baptist Church of Headland with Dr. Cecil M. Sanders, Jr. and Reverend Norman C. Simmons officiating. Burial will follow in the Gardens of Memory. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 2:30 P.M. Sunday in the Worship Center.


            In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the “Bridge To Tomorrow” Building Fund of the First Baptist Church of Headland, 301 East Church Street, Headland, Alabama 36345.


            Mrs. Knowles was a lifelong resident of Headland, daughter of the late Arthur Leslie McGee and Irelle Turner McGee. A member of the First Baptist Church since 1937, she taught various Sunday School classes for fifty-one years and was a member of the Joy Sunday School class. Mrs. Knowles was named Headland’s Woman of the Year in 1981. She was a member of the Wiregrass Duplicate Bridge Club and a Bronze Life Master in bridge. Mrs. Knowles was an honorary member of the Henry County Rescue Unit. She participated in the Burdeshaw-Solomon Senior Center and in earlier years was in charge of the Dothan Eagle delivery in Headland for thirteen years. Mrs. Knowles was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Hurley Knowles, a daughter, Nona Knowles Solomon, a son, Joe Ronald “Ronnie” Knowles and a brother, Don T. McGee.


            Surviving relatives include a daughter-in-law, Diane Pelham Knowles, Ellijay, GA; a son-in-law, John W. Solomon (Jill), Headland; five grandchildren, Kathi Lenski (Ted), Vicki Beddingfield (Bucky), Kelli Knowles, Ryan Solomon (Nancy) and Abby Phillips (Todd); seven great-grandchildren, Josephine Lenski, Zachary Beddingfield, Emily Solomon, Carey Solomon, Shelby Phillips, Logan Phillips and Collin Phillips; several nieces and nephews, including Sam Weeks; special friends and caregivers, Jessie Thornton and Eddie Wells.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Donnie Smith, Benton Beasley, Mac Davis, Johnny Lee, Eddie Wells, John Thornton and Jim McGee. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Harriet Cunningham, Regina Espy, Peggy Marley, Mary Murray, Cheryl Sellers, June Shelley, Lisa Smith, Chris Spears, Sissy Wiggins and Susan Helms.
