Jackie King, a resident of Wicksburg, passed away peacefully at his residence on Saturday, September 21, 2013. He was 79.

Funeral services will be held at 3 pm Monday, September 23, 2013 in Sunset Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tim Willis and Larry Carpenter officiating. Burial will follow in Pinckard Memorial Cemetery with Robert Byrd directing. The family will receive friends at the funeral home prior to the services on Monday from 1-3 pm. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Ridgecrest Baptist Church, 1231 Fortner St., Dothan, AL 36301 or to Gentiva Hospice, 2740 Headland Ave., Dothan, AL 36303.

Mr. King was born on June 3, 1934 in Pinckard and lived the early years of his life there. He graduated from Midland City High School in 1952, Troy State Teachers College in 1956 where he received his Batchelor's Degree in Education and in 1962 received his Master's Degree. Mr. King served as an educator for 30 years in Dale and Houston Counties and in Thomas County, Georgia. He worked at King Church Furniture as a teenager and following his retirement he worked there with his son until his illness. Mr. King loved his family dearly, but especially loved his grandchildren and his great-grandchild. He was a member of Ridgecrest Baptist Church.

Mr. King was preceded in death by his father, Lewie Frank King, his mother and step-father, Alma Jernigan King and Nathan Trawick, his brothers, Lewie Jansen King, James L. King, Joe Frank King, and Bobby Gene King, his sisters, Gladys King Rittenberg and Dr. Virginia King, and by his son-in-law, Dr. Terence M. G. Rice.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Janice Metcalf King; his children, Julie King Johnson, Jimmy (Kathy) King, and Jana King Rice; his grandchildren, Adam (Mallory) Johnson, Sydney Kathryn King and her friend, Chase Givens, Jim King and his friend SaraBeth Brown, and Lyvi Grace King; a great-grandchild, Kenzie Grace Johnson; his brother, "Bill" William M. (Joanne) King; his sister, Sue King Maund; his sister-in-law, Charlene King; his caregiver, Neely Wilson; several nieces and nephews also survive.

Serving as pallbearers will be Tom Vickers, Young Folsom, Buddy Faircloth, Billy King, Eddie Shouppe, and Don Spivey. Honorary pallbearers will be Morris Watson and Harvey Chumney.

The family would like to express their love and appreciation to Dr. Paola Bass for her excellent care.
