NEWVILLE. . .James Albert Carpenter, Jr., a resident of Dale County, between Headland & Echo, died early Wednesday morning, January 31, 2018, at his home. He was 91.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM. Saturday, February 3, 2018, in the Concord Baptist Church with Pastor Scott Wyatt officiating. Burial will follow in the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10:00 to 11:00 A.M. Saturday in the sanctuary of the Concord Baptist Church. Holman-Headland Mortuary & Cremations is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Concord Baptist Church, c/o Janara Parrish, 1350 County Road 14, Newville, AL 36353.
Mr. Carpenter was a lifelong resident of the Mt. Pisgah Community of Dale County, son of the late James Albert Carpenter, Sr. and Melinda Bess Carpenter. He served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. After discharge from the military, he was employed by Holley’s Pharmacy in Headland from 1947 until 1983. In later years, Mr. Carpenter was employed by the Southeast Alabama Medical Center Pharmacy from 1983 until 1995 when he retired. After retirement, he served as a volunteer at the Medical Center for nine years. Mr. Carpenter was a Deacon and an active member of the Concord Baptist Church and was also an active member of Gideons International, Henry County Camp.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Elmina Haselton Carpenter; three daughters, Jane C. Brantley (Rev. Mark), Newville; Sharon C. Golden (Dan), Newville; and Dr. Lila C. Windus (Peter), Toccoa, GA; a son, Dr. James E. Carpenter (Dr. Brenda), Tifton, GA; a sister, Ilene Young (John), Tifton, GA; two brothers, Clifton Carpenter (Rachael), Lawrenceville, GA; and Gerald Carpenter, Waldorf, Maryland; five grandchildren, Thomas Brantley (RueDee), Matthew Carpenter (Mary), Anna Lavender (Jacob), Charlotte Windus, and Danielle Parham (Trent); five great-grandchildren, Toby Garcia, Rebekkah Carpenter, Kaylynn Carpenter, Ben Parham, Emilie Lavender and a great-grandson on the way.
