James Allen Mullins

James Allen Mullins, a resident of Newton, transferred peacefully from his earthly home into the heavenly arms of Jesus, Monday afternoon, September 20, 2021 at the age of 66, due to a year and a half struggle with esophagus cancer, surrounded by his youngest daughter, his youngest sister and Mike, a friend. He had been living in Dothan, AL until the last 3 months of his life. His desire was to move back home, where he belonged, on the property he grew up on and always loved, where his dreams were made and to be cared for by his sisters and his youngest daughter.

James Allen Mullins was born September 23, 1954 to Louis Allen Mullins and the late Patricia Rosser Johnson in Newton, AL where he was raised in the Newton Methodist Church.

At the age of 14, he got his first motorcycle and never lost his passion for them. He always owned a motorcycle. He owned Hondas, Yamahas, Kawasaki and his last was a Suzuki Haybusa which he was so proud of and his last ride was approximately 4 months before he passed. He grew up as an adventurous fellow. He always loved exploring in the woods or just sitting there listening and watching the wild animals play and to the birds singing. He could identify each bird by its chirp or tweet. There were some that he could even mimic. As a young boy, he loved walking the Choctawhatchee River collecting arrowheads with his late grandfather, Marcus Rosser, whom he dearly loved and missed after his passing. Allen also owned a red fox and a pet gray fox. He would trap fox and raccoons, skin them and save their hides. He and his friends would go hunting in the Newton woods and shoot birds and squirrels. He would skin those squirrels; his mother would cook them for him and he would eat them. As a child, his family would go on many camping trips along with his dog, Pucky, and spend their weekends on Compass Lake where he and his sisters learned to ski at a young age. Before his death, he wanted to go back one more time. However, due to his health that trip never allowed him to accomplish that dream. He grew up with his dog, Pucky, which he lost during his senior year of high school and never got over that loss. Pucky followed him everywhere he went. From a young age to on up in age he walked the Newton Railroad tracks from County Road 14 up to the trestle at Waterford or down to Pinckard. Up until two weeks of Allen’s passing, he was clearing the trails on the creek bank where he grew up in Newton.

At a young age, he began working at his father’s feed mill, Mullins Milling Company in Ozark, AL. He attended Carroll High School in Ozark until his senior year where he graduated from Dale County High School in Midland City in 1972. He then went on to Ozark Aviation School of Technology leading him into a job at Eglin Air Force Base in Pensacola, FL testing bombs underground. Later he moved back home and got a job with Howell Plywood and then Curtis Mathis TV where he managed the store in Troy, AL. He transferred to the store in Dothan, AL and then started working for Norton’s TV and Appliance and Bill’s Appliance. He truly enjoyed his work and all those he worked for and with. He was forced to retire with Bill’s due to a stroke. However, he never lost his love for his motorcycles and the woods. He passed this love for the outdoors down to his daughter, Brooke. He also loved his children and grandchildren very much.

He was preceded in death by his beloved dogs, Pucky and Oreo, stepfather, Raymond P. Johnson; mother, Patricia Rosser Johnson; maternal grandparents, James Marcus Rosser and Esther Atkinson Rosser; paternal grandparents, Cue and Lila McMichael Mullins; uncles, James Lawrence Rosser, Rev. Marcus Hugh (Fuzz) Rosser; Jessie Frank Borland and aunt, Carolyn Rosser Borland; nephew, Charles Edward (Ed) Hinderliter, Jr.; and adopted cousin, Patrick Rosser.

He is survived by his loving daughters, Amber Stefanson (Chris) of Wisconsin, Brooke Mullins (Bobby Chandler) of Dothan; Son James Ryan Mullins of Dothan; grandchildren, Jade and Ave Stefanson of Wisconsin, Kayla McGowan of Newton, Elijah Mullins of Dothan and Noah Stefanson of Wisconsin and Tracey and Landon McCord of Cody, Wyoming; two step-grandsons, Tyler and Christopher Stefanson of Wicksburg; his father, Louis Allen Mullins of Westside Terrace in Dothan, AL; his sisters, Linda Rhodes (Paul) of Ozark and Susan Horne (Robert) of Newton; aunts, Jenna Showalter (Don) of Dothan and Arlene Rosser of Newton; and many cousins.

The family would like to thank Southern Hospice Nurses for their loving care for James Allen his last months. The family would also like to thank their cousin and special friend, Debbie Rosser, for her visits and the time she spent during his days at his side and also all the dear friends that dropped by. Thank you to Mike Majors and TJ for the building of his porch, your visits and your prayers. It really meant a lot to Allen. Also, last but not least, thanks to all his friends he grew up with from Newton and Ozark and the ones he got to know in later years from Dothan and Troy. He loved you all and treasured your friendship.
