ECHO COMMUNITY. . .James Eugene (Gene) Ward, a resident of the Echo Community of Dale County, died early Thursday afternoon, November 27, 2014, at his home. He was 86.


            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, November 29, 2014, in the Echo United Methodist Church with Reverend Tom Skeen officiating. Burial will follow in the Echo Cemetery. Holman-Headland Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until 2:00 P.M. Saturday in the church sanctuary.


            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Echo Cemetery Fund, Charlotte Grantham, 1204 County Road 69, Newville, AL 36353 or to CURE Childhood Cancer, 1117 Perimeter Center, West, Suite N-402, Atlanta, GA 30338 (curechildhoodcancer.org).


            Mr. Ward was born and reared in the Echo Community where he lived most of his lifetime. He was a 1947 graduate of the Dale County High School in Ozark. Mr. Ward served his country in the U. S. Army during the Korean War era.  He was a member of the Echo United Methodist Church. Mr. Ward was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Susan Ward, his father, Jessie Titus Ward, his mother, Tera Ward Riley, and his step-father, Lewie Riley.


            Surviving relatives include his wife, Linda Riley Ward, a son, Jimmy Ward (Lana), all of the Echo Community; two grandchildren, Jennifer Ward Johnson (Jerrod), and Austin Ward (Candice); five great-grandchildren, Hayes Johnson, Sam and Molly Johnson, Laney Ward, and Chance Ward; a step-sister, Charlotte Grantham, Bertha Community; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law from the Riley family, Dan and Charlene Riley, Nancy and John Richburg, and Mike and Debbie Riley; several nieces, nephews, and cousins.


            Serving as active pallbearers will be Mike Riley, Warde McDaniel, Dusty Trawick, Keith Grantham, David Riley, and Bill Ferguson.
