James F. Becker


 


James F. Becker, 89, a resident of Dothan, died Monday, September 10, 2012 at Flowers Hospital.


 


Memorial services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday, September 17, 2012 at Covenant United Methodist Church with Rev. Kyle Gatlin officiating.


 


In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Covenant UMC, Golden K Kiwanis Club, The Salvation Army or the Kidney Cancer Association.


 


Mr. Becker was born May 24, 1923 in Elgin, Illinois, the son of Mabel Fenwick and Frank E. Becker. He spent the early years of his life in Elgin and was a graduate of Elgin High School. He later attended the University of Illinois in Champaign and Urbana. Mr. Becker was a veteran of World World II where he served in the 14th Armor Division in the U.S. Army. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart and became a lifetime member of the DAV.


 


On Feb. 17, 1946, he was married to Anita V. Hagstrom and they resided with their family in Champaign, Illinois before moving to Dothan in 2001. He was employed with the Engineering firm of Brown, Davis, and Mullins in Champaign for 37 years before retiring in 1989 as vice-president. He was an active member of First UMC in Champaign.


 


Mr. Becker held a private pilot’s license. He was an active member of the Wiregrass Golden Circle K Kiwanis Club in Dothan where he served as President and Treasurer. He volunteered his time delivering Meals on Wheels and participated in the ALS walk for 3 consecutive years. He attended Community Bible Study in Dothan and was an active member of Covenant United Methodist Church in Dothan.


 


He is preceded in death by his parents, Mabel Fenwick and Frank E. Becker; his wife, Anita V. Becker; a brother, Charles Becker; his son, Paul J. Becker and a granddaughter, Anna Little.


 


He is survived by his daughters, Ann C. McCloskey of Santa Rosa Beach, FL and Laura Little of Charlotte, NC; granddaughters, Jennifer Rieks and Meghan McSwain, both of Denver, CO; great-grandchildren, Aiden McSwain, Andrew McSwain and Baby Rieks.
