Born to Texas and Flint Hartzog on July 27, 1943, James was drawn from a young age to police work. James became a Dothan Police Officer in the late 1960s and retired as a Sergeant twenty-two years later. After retiring from the Police Department, James worked at Loomis Fargo for many years and was a business owner in Headland, Alabama.
James had many hobbies over the years… fishing, building just about anything, traveling to the beach or mountains, and, of course, watching Alabama football. He was also an avid reader. Being a Christian, James read the Bible from front to back multiple times. He also read the Book of Mormon and many other religious texts—from an eagerness to understand more about other belief systems. For leisure James read westerns and fantasy fiction. He read everything by Louis L'amore and other western writers, but his favorite genre was fantasy. He loved J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter and read the series multiple times, and he loved many other fantasy fiction writers as well. James was a caring and loving father and husband.
James is survived by his beloved wife Sukcha Hwang Hartzog, his children Michael and Sally Hartzog, Frances Cook (Matt Cook), Sherry A. Brooks- Robinson (Joel E. Robinson), James V Brooks (Jamie Johnson), Cedric L. Brooks (Krista McCauley), and his grandchildren (Charles F. Jones III, Sophie G. Hartzog, Shawn L. Stewart Jr., Cedric L. Brooks Jr., Maximus M. Hartzog, Zoe Cook, Lauren L. Brooks).
