James H. "Jim" Johnson, Jr.

James H. "Jim" Johnson, Jr., a cherished husband, brother, father, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 26, 2024, in Dothan, Alabama, at the age of 92. Born in Brantley, Alabama, on May 22, 1932, Jim's long and inspiring journey began in a small town, but his impact and legacy reached far beyond its borders.

Jim's life was marked by a deep dedication to his country, his education, and his career. After graduating high school in 1950, he attended the University of Alabama, only to pause his studies to serve his nation in the Korean War. Upon his honorable discharge from the US Army in 1956, Jim returned to complete his education, earning a Chemical Engineering Degree in 1959. His academic excellence was later recognized when he was selected as a Distinguished Engineering Fellow by the College of Engineering.

Professionally, Jim made significant contributions to the paper industry, demonstrating his leadership and expertise in major corporations in the industry including Union Camp in Savannah, GA, Rust Engineering, Champion International, and St. Regis Paper Company, where he pioneered new methods in project cost forecasting and paper mill process analysis. His entrepreneurial spirit shone brightly as he and his brother, Malcolm "Mickey" Johnson, successfully ran an Express Oil Change franchise, and managed real estate investments together until their retirement.

Jim's personal life was as rich and fulfilling as his professional one. He shared 69 wonderful years with his loving wife, Carol Farris Johnson, and was a guiding force in the lives of his family members, including his brother Mickey. Jim was preceded in death by his father, James H. Johnson, Sr., his mother, Julia Johnson, and his son, Mark Johnson. His role as the head of the household during his father's service in World War II set the stage for a lifetime of responsibility and care for those he loved.

An active member of his community, Jim served at the Evergreen Presbyterian Church and was a proud member of the Dothan Rotary Club. His interests extended to a love of travel, and he often embarked on cruises with his wife and their dear friends, Ted and Marion Robinson. Jim was known for his loving nature, his courage in the face of adversity, and his kindness that touched all who knew him.

In his interactions with others, Jim embodied the words of Winston Churchill, "We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give." Indeed, Jim gave generously, not only through his professional ventures and community service but through the steadfast love and support he provided to his family and friends.

Jim will be remembered not only for his achievements but for the warmth and strength that he brought to every day of his remarkable 92 years.
