Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Sunday, June 26, 2022 in Sunset Funeral Home chapel with James’ beloved nephew, Pastor Joey Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will gather together at 9:30 and will begin receiving friends by 10.

James Harold Mahaney, a resident of Newton, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 22, 2022. He was 79 years of age.


Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Sunday, June 26, 2022 in Sunset Funeral Home chapel with James’ beloved nephew, Pastor Joey Smith officiating. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will gather together at 9:30 and will begin receiving friends by 10.


James was born on April 7, 1943 in Crossville, TN to James Thomas and Willie Pippins Mahaney. After leaving high school, he joined the United States Army and had an illustrious 26 years while starting his career as a secret courier holding the highest clearance given to a soldier while in Okinawa, Japan. James transitioned as an Attaché Intelligence Operator under the Joint Chief of Staff at the Pentagon in Washington, DC. His career allowed for a wide range of opportunities for himself and his family to experience the world until his retirement.


James is preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.


Survived by his wife, Barbara Mahaney; his daughters, Dana (Timothy) Dillard and Karen Mahaney; his grandchildren, Felicia (Seth) Ward, Lee Dillard, Paul Dillard, Hilary (Art) Peace and Kyle (Pamela) Henderson; his great-grandchildren, Addison Ward, Killian Peace and Gabriel Peace; his sister, Charlotte Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews all of which knew they were most beloved.
