CLOPTON. . .James Howell Peebles, a resident of the Clopton community, died Thursday morning, June 14, 2012, at his home. He was 88.



            Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, June 16, 2012, in the Clopton United Methodist Church with Reverend Kenneth Preston and Reverend Sonny Moore officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Holman-Abbeville Mortuary is in charge of funeral arrangements. The family will receive friends following the funeral services in the Clopton Community House.



            In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Clopton United Methodist Church or the Clopton Methodist Cemetery Fund or the Clopton Community House, all c/o Jackie Blankenship, 2967 County Road 69, Newville, AL. 36353.



            Mr. Peebles was a lifelong resident of the Clopton community in Dale County, son of the late Grover Cleveland Peebles, Sr. and Bertie Wise Peebles. He was a graduate of the Dale County High School in Ozark. Mr. Peebles served his country in the U. S. Army during World War II. He was an active member of the Clopton United Methodist Church and participated in all church activities. He was also a member of the Huggin Molly’s Motley Men in Abbeville. Mr. Peebles served as Director and Executive Committee Member on the Dale County Farmers Federation Board. He served as supervisor for the Dale County Soil and Water Conservation District and on its board of directors for thirty-four years, presently serving as Secretary-Treasurer. He was an active member of the Bradley-Keller American Legion Post in Abbeville. Mr. Peebles was engaged in farming most of his adult lifetime.



            Mr. Peebles was preceded in death by a sister, Merle Peebles Fisher and two brothers, Grover Cleveland Peebles, Jr. and Mike Cleveland Peebles.



            Surviving relatives include his wife, Annie Howard Kelley Peebles, Clopton; two daughters, Vivia Peebles, Abbeville; Alice Peebles Elliott and husband, George, Homewood, Al.; a granddaughter, Grace Elliott, Homewood; a sister, Doris Peebles Stump, Enterprise; a brother, Sam R. Peebles and wife, Barbara, Slocomb; a sister-in-law, Joy Peebles, Hazlehurst, GA; several nieces and nephews and a loving church family.



            Serving as active pallbearers will be Ricardo Navarro, Jackie Blankenship, Thomas Waters, Adam Pritchett, Lonnie Battle, Jack Reynolds, Dr. John Sanders, Kyle Anderson and Estus Walker.
